County-specific variations apply

NJ's 21 counties each operate their own county correctional facilities, administered by the County Sheriff (or in some counties, a separate Department of Corrections). Essex County, Bergen County, Middlesex County, and Hudson County have large facilities with good online search tools. Several NJ counties have formed shared-services agreements. Camden County, Mercer County (Trenton), and Monmouth County also have accessible online rosters.

New Jersey Notes

Important state-specific details

  • NJDOC manages all state prisons including Northern State Prison (Newark), South Woods State Prison (Bridgeton), Bayside State Prison, and others; Offender Search at njdoc.gov covers current state inmates.
  • County jails operated by County Sheriffs - separate from NJDOC; recent arrests will NOT appear in NJDOC database; pre-trial detainees and those serving sentences of up to 364 days are in county facilities.
  • NJ Megan's Law Sex Offender Registry: offenderis.com - searchable online by name, county, or municipality.
  • For visitation, phone calls, sending money, commissary, or mailing to a NJ inmate: inmateaid.com has NJDOC and county facility details.
