Nebraska Notes
Important state-specific details
Nebraska does NOT have election day registration - must register before the election.
NO-EXCUSE ABSENTEE VOTING: all registered voters may vote by mail; apply online or by mail through county election office.
FELONY VOTING RIGHTS (IMPORTANT - Recent developments): Nebraska law as of 2024 (LB 20, effective July 18, 2024) eliminated the former 2-year waiting period after sentence completion; now, voting rights are restored upon completion of sentence INCLUDING probation and parole. The Nebraska Supreme Court upheld LB 20 in October 2024. You cannot register to vote if currently incarcerated OR on probation/parole for a felony conviction; rights restored immediately upon "final discharge" from supervision (must re-register).
PHOTO ID REQUIRED: Nebraska requires ID to vote; acceptable forms include Nebraska driver's license, Nebraska state ID, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, and others; if no qualifying ID, may vote provisionally; contact county election office.
Nebraska has UNIQUE ELECTORAL VOTE ALLOCATION: Nebraska is one of only two states (with Maine) that awards Electoral College votes by congressional district rather than winner-take-all; Omaha's 2nd Congressional District has split from the state in presidential elections.
Polls open typically 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM; verify with county.
