County-specific variations apply
Maine's 15 county jails vary in size and online presence. Cumberland County (Portland) and Penobscot County (Bangor) have the most online resources. Smaller counties (Piscataquis, Washington, Waldo, Franklin) may have very limited online access, requiring direct phone calls to the jail or sheriff's office. Note that Cumberland and Oxford counties share a single jail facility.
Maine Notes
Important state-specific details
Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) manages all state prisons and community corrections; the online Prisoner/Probationer Search at maine.gov/corrections covers currently incarcerated state inmates and those on active supervision.
County jails operated by County Sheriffs - separate from MDOC; recent arrests will NOT appear in MDOC database.
MDOC online search covers both prisoners (incarcerated) and probationers (on supervision) - a comprehensive community corrections view.
Maine Sex Offender Registry: maine.gov/dps/msp/investigations/criminal-records/sex-offender-registry - searchable online.
For visitation, phone calls, sending money, commissary, or mailing to a Maine inmate: inmateaid.com has MDOC and county jail facility details.
