How do I register to vote or check my registration?

Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Alaska resident, at least 18 years old (or within 90 days of 18th birthday), not convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude (or have rights restored), and not registered in another state
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: Use the Alaska Division of Elections online system at elections.alaska.gov - requires Alaska driver's license or state ID number matching DMV records
  4. BY MAIL/FAX/EMAIL: Download and complete the Alaska Voter Registration Application; mail, fax, or email to your Regional Elections Office
  5. IN PERSON: Visit a Division of Elections Office, the DMV, or a voter registration agency
  6. AUTOMATIC: Alaska automatically registers eligible PFD (Permanent Fund Dividend) applicants - check your registration status if you apply for PFD
  7. Submit registration before the deadline
  8. Receive your voter registration card by mail confirming registration and listing your polling place

Important state-specific details

  • Alaska's Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) automatic voter registration: Alaskans who apply for the PFD are automatically registered unless they opt out. After the March 31 PFD deadline, the Division of Elections sends opt-out notices to newly registered voters.
  • Alaska offers early voting (15 days before election, no excuse) - one of the more voter-friendly states in this regard.
  • Alaska offers no-excuse absentee (mail) voting - any registered voter can request a mail ballot.
  • Photo ID required to vote in person: Alaska driver's license, state ID, voter ID card, military ID, passport, or other current photo ID.
  • Polling hours: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM local time; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
  • Same-day voter registration available ONLY during Presidential elections.
  • Pre-registration available for 17-year-olds within 90 days of their 18th birthday.
