How do I register to vote or check my registration?

County Recorder (county level) / Arizona Secretary of State (state level)
Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Arizona resident, at least 18 years old by Election Day, not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction, and not adjudicated incapacitated by a court
  2. Provide proof of citizenship - Arizona requires documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) to vote a full ballot in all elections; without DPOC you may be registered as a "federal only" voter eligible only for federal races
  3. Choose your registration method:
  4. ONLINE: AZMVDNow at azmvdnow.gov - requires Arizona driver's license or state ID number
  5. BY MAIL: Download form at azsos.gov/elections/voters/registering-vote; complete, sign, and mail to your County Recorder
  6. IN PERSON: Visit your County Recorder's office, the MVD, or many government public assistance offices
  7. Submit registration at least 29 days before the election
  8. Receive voter registration card by mail (4-6 weeks) confirming registration and listing your polling place

Arizona Notes

Important state-specific details

  • Arizona's documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) requirement is unique - not all states require this. Without DPOC, you are a "federal only" voter. Provide DPOC to your County Recorder to become eligible for all elections.
  • Permanent Early Voting List: Arizona voters can sign up to automatically receive a mail ballot for every election - highly popular; most Arizona voters vote by mail.
  • Arizona does NOT have same-day voter registration (except during Presidential elections in some circumstances).
  • Voter registrations do not expire - you do not need to re-register before each election.
  • Photo ID required to vote in person - Arizona driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, tribal ID, or other qualifying photo ID.
  • Polling hours: typically 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
