California County
San Benito County, California
The birthplace of California motorcycling culture and Mission San Juan Bautista's Hitchcock connection - from Hollister's 1947 motorcycle rally (the "Hollister Riot" - a July 4th rally that Life Magazine's staged photograph of a drunken biker launched the outlaw motorcycle club mythology and inspired The Wild One with Marlon Brando) to Mission San Juan Bautista (the largest of the California missions, where Alfred Hitchcock filmed Vertigo's bell tower scenes - though the mission actually has no bell tower, which Hitchcock added digitally), the San Andreas Fault's surface trace running directly through San Juan Bautista, and one of the Bay Area's fastest-growing counties as housing prices push families inland from Silicon Valley.

PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Pinnacles National Park (one of California’s most recent NPS designations, elevated from monument to national park in 2013; bizarre volcanic crags created by an ancient volcano on the Salinas Valley side of the San Andreas Fault that has traveled 195 miles north on the Pacific Plate; California condor nesting – Pinnacles is one of the primary California condor recovery sites in California; talus caves with bat colonies; rock climbing; hiking); San Juan Bautista State Historic Park (one of California’s finest historic districts – the largest California mission; the town square and surrounding adobes are extraordinarily well-preserved; Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” climactic scene was set here – the mission and surrounding plaza are instantly recognizable to film fans); Fremont Peak State Park (Gavilan Peak area – astronomical observatory)
Notes: Pinnacles NP is one of California’s hidden gems – the condors soaring over the volcanic crags are extraordinary; the rock climbing is world-class (the Bear Gulch area’s challenging routes attract climbers from throughout the West); the talus caves (formed by jumbled volcanic boulders) are fascinating and some are open for exploration; San Juan Bautista’s well-preserved Spanish colonial plaza with the mission, old hotel, stable, and barracks creates an incredibly intact picture of Alta California; the connection to Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” (Kim Novak’s character dramatically appeared in the mission’s bell tower that doesn’t actually exist – it was removed in an 1906 earthquake and Hitchcock couldn’t film the tower he needed) gives the site a cinematic quality
Notes: County GIS; Calaveras Fault creep monitoring is unique to San Benito County – USGS creep meter measurements track the slow aseismic fault movement; seismic hazard zone mapping; Pinnacles NP geological mapping; San Benito River watershed mapping

Environmental: California SWRCB; Central Coast RWQCB; NPS (Pinnacles NP); Calaveras Fault environmental considerations; San Benito River watershed; agricultural pesticide and fertilizer use; wine industry environmental management
Notes: The Calaveras Fault’s constant creep through Hollister is one of the world’s most unusual and significant geological phenomena – buildings built across the fault are gradually sheared; San Benito County is essentially a field laboratory for fault creep research; Pinnacles NP’s geological story (a volcanic field carried 195 miles north on the Pacific Plate from its origin near Lancaster, CA) is one of the most dramatic geological illustrations of plate tectonics accessible to the public; San Benito River water quality is important for downstream communities and agricultural use; Pinnacles condor population requires clean water and undisturbed habitat
About San Benito County
San Benito County is a small agricultural and bedroom community county between Silicon Valley and the Salinas Valley – one of the Bay Area’s fastest-growing commuter destinations as housing affordability drives families inland from Santa Clara County.
Hollister (the county seat, population ~42,000) has grown dramatically as a Bay Area commuter community – US-101 and CA-25 connections to Silicon Valley have made it a destination for families priced out of Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. Its permanent place in American cultural mythology derives from the 1947 motorcycle rally that Life Magazine’s famous photograph – of a biker draped over a motorcycle surrounded by beer bottles – launched the outlaw biker cultural archetype that inspired The Wild One (1953) with Marlon Brando.
San Juan Bautista (population ~2,000) is one of California’s most historically significant small towns. Mission San Juan Bautista (1797) – the largest of the 21 California missions in terms of nave size – sits on the edge of an active branch of the San Andreas Fault. Alfred Hitchcock filmed portions of Vertigo (1958) here, using the mission’s façade while digitally adding the bell tower that the actual mission lacks.
The San Andreas Fault runs directly through San Juan Bautista State Historic Park, with the fault scarp visible as a distinct ridge in the plaza.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go

Step 1: figure out which path applies
California recently increased its small-estate thresholds substantially, so check this first – more estates now qualify to skip full probate than in past years.
Small Estate Affidavit (personal property) – for estates with personal property valued at $208,850 or less (for deaths on or after April 1, 2025; holds through March 31, 2028). No court filing needed – present the signed affidavit directly to the bank or institution holding the property. Must wait at least 40 days after the death, and no probate proceeding can already be pending.
Petition to Determine Succession to Real Property, Primary Residence – for a decedent’s primary California residence valued at $750,000 or less (Judicial Council Form DE-310). Requires a 40-day wait, notice to heirs, and a probate referee appraisal.
Affidavit for Real Property of Small Value – for other (non-primary-residence) California real property valued at $69,625 or less (Form DE-305). Requires a 6-month wait.
Formal Probate – required when the estate exceeds these thresholds. California typically uses the Independent Administration of Estates Act (IAEA), letting the personal representative handle most matters without a court hearing for each step.
California is a community property state – a surviving spouse already owns their half of community property, and can often use a simplified Spousal Property Petition (Form DE-221) instead.
If using the small estate affidavit (personal property)
Wait at least 40 days after the death.
Confirm total qualifying California personal property (excluding trust assets, joint tenancy, POD/TOD accounts, and beneficiary-designated accounts) is $208,850 or less, using date-of-death values.
Complete the affidavit under Probate Code § 13100.
Present it with a certified death certificate directly to the bank or institution – no court filing required. Collecting property this way makes you personally liable for the decedent’s unsecured debts up to the value received (Prob. Code § 13109).
IF USING THE PRIMARY RESIDENCE PETITION OR SMALL REAL PROPERTY AFFIDAVIT
Confirm the property qualifies and the applicable waiting period has passed (40 days for the primary-residence petition; 6 months for the small real property affidavit).
File the petition (Form DE-310) or affidavit (Form DE-305) with the San Benito County Superior Court.
A probate referee appraises the property; heirs receive notice.
Once approved, the property transfers without full probate administration.
If formal probate is required
Deliver the original will (if any) to the court clerk within 30 days of learning of the death (Prob. Code § 8200).
File a Petition for Probate (Form DE-111) to admit the will and request appointment as personal representative.
The court issues Letters Testamentary (Form DE-150) or Letters of Administration.
If Independent Administration authority is granted, the personal representative can act on most matters without separate court hearings.
Notice to creditors and an inventory/appraisal (with a probate referee) follow, along with payment of debts and taxes.
The estate closes with a final petition for distribution.
What it costs
Small estate affidavit / real property affidavits: no court filing fee for the personal-property affidavit; filing fees apply to the DE-310 primary-residence petition and DE-305 small real property affidavit.
Formal probate filing fee: several hundred dollars, varying somewhat by county.
Personal representative and attorney compensation: statutory fee schedule based on estate size (Prob. Code §§ 10800–10810) – a percentage that declines as the estate grows.
No California state estate tax or inheritance tax.
