How do I register to vote or check my registration?

Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election, at least 18 years old by Election Day, not serving a sentence of detention/confinement for a felony conviction (those on parole or probation CAN vote in Colorado)
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: GoVoteColorado.gov - requires valid Colorado driver's license or state ID number, OR last 4 digits of SSN; fastest method
  4. BY MAIL: Download form from sos.colorado.gov; complete and mail to your County Clerk and Recorder - must be received at least 8 days before Election Day to receive a mail ballot
  5. IN PERSON: Visit County Clerk and Recorder, DMV, voter registration agencies - can register through Election Day at Voter Service and Polling Centers
  6. AUTOMATIC: Colorado automatically registers eligible citizens through DMV interactions; county clerk sends notice; you may decline within 20 days
  7. To receive a mail ballot: registration must be received at least 8 days before Election Day
  8. If registering after the 8-day deadline: register and vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC) through and including Election Day
  9. Receive voter registration card confirming enrollment

Registration administered at the county level by the County Clerk and Recorder. If you move between Colorado counties, update your registration with your new county. Voter Service and Polling Centers (VSPCs) serve as combined registration, ballot drop-off, and voting locations - available during the 15 days before and on Election Day. Locations vary by county.

Important state-specific details

  • Colorado is a UNIVERSAL VOTE-BY-MAIL state - every active registered voter automatically receives a mail ballot; you do not need to request one. You can still vote in person at a VSPC if preferred.
  • SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: Colorado allows in-person registration through and including Election Day at VSPCs - register and vote the same day.
  • AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION through DMV interactions - county clerk sends a notice; you can decline within 20 days or affiliate with a party.
  • Felony conviction: those serving a sentence of detention or confinement CANNOT vote; those on PAROLE or PROBATION CAN vote in Colorado - contact your county clerk if unsure.
  • Pre-registration: 16 and 17-year-olds can pre-register; registration activates at 18.
  • Non-photo ID accepted for voting in Colorado - utility bills, bank statements, government documents showing name and address are acceptable.
  • Polls open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM on Election Day; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
