PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (South Rim – Montrose County; the canyon’s South Rim Drive provides a series of overlooks into one of the deepest and most dramatic canyons in the US – the Painted Wall at 2,250 feet is Colorado’s tallest cliff; the Chasm View overlook is considered one of the most terrifying natural viewpoints in Colorado; inner canyon hiking requires permits and technical skills; the canyon is genuinely extraordinary); Curecanti National Recreation Area (east of Montrose – Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal Reservoirs; boating; fishing); Uncompahgre National Forest; Gunnison Gorge NCA (BLM – wild trout fishing; wilderness experience below Black Canyon); Chief Ouray Memorial and Museum (Ouray/Montrose border – honoring the great Ute leader who negotiated for his people’s rights); Ridgway State Park (north of Ridgway town – excellent state park with reservoir recreation; excellent mountain views including the San Juan Mountains backdrop); Telluride accessible via US-550 (San Miguel County – 65 miles)
Notes: Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of Colorado’s most dramatic natural features; the canyon walls are so steep and the canyon so deep and narrow that portions of the Gunnison River at the bottom receive only 33 minutes of sunlight per day; the Painted Wall’s dark gneiss streaked with lighter pegmatite intrusions is extraordinarily beautiful; the inner canyon hiking (scrambling and rappelling required for most routes) is genuinely serious mountaineering terrain; Montrose is increasingly a gateway for Black Canyon visitors; the San Juan Mountains visible from Ridgway SP provide one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in Colorado

ENVIRONMENTAL / WASTE MANAGEMENT
Solid Waste: Montrose County – (970) 249-9110; Montrose city collection
Environmental: Colorado DPHE; Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association; USFS (Uncompahgre NF); NPS (Black Canyon NP); BLM (Gunnison Gorge NCA; Dominguez-Escalante NCA); COGCC (oil and gas); Nucla-Naturita coal plant closure
Notes: The Nucla Power Plant’s closure (the last coal plant in the Gunnison Valley – closed 2019) is a significant energy transition event affecting Nucla and Naturita economically; the plant provided most of the towns’ employment; Colorado and the plant’s owners are working on economic diversification for these communities; the Black Canyon’s ecology is extremely sensitive – the canyon walls support rare plant communities (ferns and mosses in the deep shade) and the Gunnison River below supports federally endangered Colorado pikeminnow and razorback sucker; the Uncompahgre Valley’s irrigation water system (Gunnison Tunnel completed 1909 – one of the longest irrigation tunnels in the world; carries Gunnison River water 5.8 miles through the mountains to the Uncompahgre Valley) has supported agriculture for over a century; water management under Bureau of Reclamation oversight
About Montrose County
Montrose County is the Western Slope’s practical city – a regional hub for healthcare, retail, and agricultural services for a wide swath of southwestern Colorado. Montrose Regional Airport connects the area to Denver with surprising frequency for a city of its size, making it accessible in a way that many Western Slope communities are not. The Uncompahgre Valley’s irrigation agriculture – peaches, corn, hay, and cattle – is genuinely productive, and the Ute Park area south of Montrose extends into some of the most scenic mesa-and-canyon terrain in Colorado.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, 15 miles east of Montrose, is one of the most dramatic but least-crowded national parks in the country – a canyon whose depth (2,722 feet) and sheer walls dwarf the Grand Canyon in vertical extent, though not in length. The Colorado National Monument to the north and the Curecanti National Recreation Area on Blue Mesa Reservoir round out a concentration of public lands that makes Montrose County a destination for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer to avoid the crowds of more famous Colorado destinations. Montrose has also attracted retirees from Front Range cities seeking lower housing costs and milder Western Slope climate.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Montrose County has two courthouse locations – file in whichever is more convenient.
Montrose County Justice Center – 1200 North Grand Avenue, Bin A, Montrose, CO 81401. (970) 252-4300. Nucla Montrose Associate Court – 300 Main Street, Nucla, CO 81424. (970) 864-7373. Hours (both): Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Colorado follows the Uniform Probate Code, one of the more streamlined, less court-intensive systems in the country.
Small Estate Affidavit (personal property) – for estates where personal property totals less than roughly $86,000 (twice the “exempt property” amount under C.R.S. § 15-11-403, which adjusts annually for inflation – always confirm the current year’s figure with the court). Available starting 10 days after the death. No court filing required; present the affidavit (Form JDF 999) directly to whoever holds the property.
Summary Administration for small real property – a separate, roughly parallel threshold applies to real property equity. This route does require a court filing.
Informal Probate – the standard path for most estates with a will or clear heirs and no disputes. Handled largely by the court Registrar with minimal hearings.
Formal Probate – required for contested wills, disputed appointments, or complicated estates.
If using the small estate affidavit (personal property)
Wait at least 10 days after the death.
Confirm the fair market value of the decedent’s property (less liens) doesn’t exceed the current statutory threshold, and that no probate has already been opened.
Complete Form JDF 999, Collection of Personal Property by Affidavit.
Present it, along with a certified death certificate, to the bank or institution holding the property – no court filing needed.
If filing for informal or formal probate
File the appropriate application with the Montrose County District Court, at either location: Form JDF 910 (with a will) or JDF 908 (without one). For formal probate, file JDF 920 or the intestate equivalent. Filing fee is $199.
The court (or Registrar, for informal cases) appoints a personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
In informal probate, the personal representative then manages the estate largely independently.
Creditors have 4 months from first publication of notice to file claims.
The estate closes once debts are paid and assets are distributed.
What it costs
Small estate affidavit: no court filing fee.
Informal or formal probate filing fee: $199.
Personal representative compensation: “reasonable compensation” – no fixed statutory percentage.
No Colorado state estate tax or inheritance tax.
