Key Issues: Eglin AFB PFAS contamination (Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field have documented PFAS groundwater contamination from decades of firefighting foam use in aviation emergency training; the contamination has affected drinking water supplies near the bases; the Air Force is conducting the largest PFAS remediation program in Florida at these bases; affected private well owners have been provided alternative water sources; the contamination plume’s extent and remediation progress is closely monitored); Choctawhatchee Bay water quality (the bay receives agricultural runoff from the Choctawhatchee River watershed and stormwater from Niceville and Fort Walton Beach; nutrients support algal blooms; the bay’s oyster reefs have declined; the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance coordinates restoration efforts); Destin resort development environmental impacts (the intense development of the Destin corridor – one of the most densely developed beach communities in the Panhandle – creates stormwater management challenges, beach erosion, and impacts on the remaining natural areas; Henderson Beach State Park provides critical natural buffer); Eglin longleaf pine ecosystem management (Eglin’s 724-square-mile reservation contains the most significant longleaf pine ecosystem in the Florida Panhandle; the prescribed burning program (one of the most extensive in the Southeast) maintains the open pine savanna structure that red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises, and dozens of rare plant species require)
Notes: The PFAS contamination at Eglin and Hurlburt is one of the most significant environmental remediation programs in Florida – the Air Force is spending hundreds of millions of dollars monitoring, treating, and providing alternative water to affected communities; the contamination resulted from decades of training exercises using aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) at fire training areas; the PFAS chemicals are persistent in the environment and difficult to remediate; Eglin’s environmental programs extend beyond PFAS – the base’s land management (burning hundreds of thousands of acres annually) is one of the most significant conservation programs in the Panhandle; the longleaf pine ecosystem that military training inadvertently preserved (by preventing commercial timber harvest and development) is now one of the most ecologically valuable military lands in the southeastern US
About Okaloosa County
Okaloosa County is the Florida Panhandle’s dual identity in one county – an enormous military installation that defines the region’s economy and culture, and some of the most spectacular beaches in the United States.
Eglin Air Force Base – covering 724 square miles of land and 86,000 square miles of airspace – is the largest Air Force base in the world by total area. Eglin is the home of Air Force Materiel Command’s armament testing, the Air Force Special Operations Command, the 7th Special Forces Group (Army), and numerous tenant units. The base’s vast holdings across Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Walton counties include training ranges, test facilities, and forest land that serves as a de facto nature preserve. Eglin’s economic impact on Okaloosa County is enormous – the base employs approximately 10,000 military and 10,000 civilian personnel, with a regional economic impact measured in billions annually.
Destin – positioned on a narrow peninsula between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico – has the most photographed Gulf water in the Florida Panhandle. The East Pass through which Gulf water flows into the bay creates the extraordinary clarity and emerald-green color that has made Destin’s beaches among the most celebrated in the Southeast. Destin’s Harborwalk Village and its fleet of deep-sea fishing charter boats reflect a fishing tradition that predates the resort development – Destin began as a fishing village founded by Leonard Destin in the 1830s.
Fort Walton Beach and Niceville are the county’s other primary communities, with Niceville’s Choctawhatchee Bay waterfront and proximity to Eglin making it a preferred residential community for military families.
Crestview (the county seat, population ~30,000 – inland, north of Destin) is a rapidly growing community of military families and affordable housing relative to the coast.
