Roads & Utilities
ROADS & TRANSPORTATION
Roads: US-319 and SR-267 serve Crawfordville, the county seat, part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area; Sopchoppy is the county’s largest incorporated municipality.
Notes: Wakulla County was created March 11, 1843, named for the Wakulla River. Crawfordville, established after an 1843 hurricane destroyed the earlier settlement of Port Leon, became the permanent county seat in 1892 and is named for Senator John L. Crawford. Crawfordville genuinely holds a rare distinction: it is one of only two unincorporated county seats among Florida’s 67 counties, the other being East Naples in Collier County. In 1528, Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narváez’s expedition passed through the area, an early chapter in the region’s long documented history.

BUILDING & PERMITS
Office: Wakulla County Courthouse – Church Street/Highway 319, Crawfordville, FL | (850) 926-0905. The Old Wakulla County Courthouse (built 1892-93; National Register of Historic Places since 1976), genuinely thought to be Florida’s last wood-frame courthouse still in active use before its restoration, is built of solid heart pine with a hand-carved cypress mullet weathervane and is one of only three surviving wooden courthouses in Florida; it has been restored and now serves as a Wakulla County library.
Notes: The county’s original 1843-era courthouse records were lost when the courthouse burned in 1896; surviving records date from that year forward.

NOTES: Wakulla County is the fifth county completed in this Florida Round 3 v2 redo batch, under the A+ sourced standard established for this project. Crawfordville’s genuine rarity as one of only two unincorporated Florida county seats, and its historic wooden courthouse, are among the standout local facts covered here. All contact information above was sourced via web search as of early August 2026 and should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit, deadline-sensitive filing, or emergency-adjacent decision.
About Wakulla County
Wakulla County’s Wakulla Springs is one of Florida’s most extraordinary natural features – a single spring vent discharging 400,000 gallons of crystal-clear 68°F water per minute into a basin so deep and clear that the prehistoric bones of Ice Age megafauna on the spring floor are visible from the surface. The Lodge at Wakulla Springs, a 1930s Mediterranean Revival building, is a Florida historic landmark. The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge on the county’s Gulf Coast protects one of the most important wintering sites for migratory birds on the eastern flyway.
The county functions partly as a Tallahassee exurb – state government employees and FSU/FAMU faculty live here for the rural character and lower costs – and partly as a conservation county where the Spring Creek communities and the Big Bend coastline define a genuinely remote Florida experience.
