How do I register to vote or check my registration?

Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Georgia resident, at least 18 years old by Election Day (may pre-register at 17.5), not serving a sentence including incarceration, parole, or probation for a felony conviction, and not ruled mentally incompetent by a court
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: Secretary of State Online Voter Registration at registertovote.sos.ga.gov - requires Georgia driver's license or state ID number
  4. BY MAIL: Download Georgia voter registration form at sos.ga.gov; complete, sign, and mail to your County Board of Registrars - must be received at least 30 days before Election Day
  5. IN PERSON: County Board of Registrars office; Georgia Department of Driver Services; public libraries; public assistance offices; military recruitment offices; schools; and other designated agencies
  6. Submit registration at least 30 days before Election Day
  7. Receive voter registration card (precinct card) by mail confirming enrollment and listing your polling place

Voter registration administered at the county level by the County Board of Registrars in each of Georgia's 159 counties. Moving between Georgia counties: submit new voter registration application to new county - update required. Early voting locations and hours vary by county - check My Voter Page for your county's specific locations and schedule. Large metro counties (Fulton, Gwinnett, DeKalb, Cobb) have multiple early voting sites; rural counties may have one.

Important state-specific details

  • Georgia does NOT have same-day voter registration.
  • PRE-REGISTRATION: Available at 17.5 years old - becomes active registration at 18; 17-year-olds can vote in primary if they will be 18 by the general election.
  • FELONY CONVICTION: Georgia requires completion of the FULL sentence including incarceration, parole, AND probation before voting rights are restored - stricter than many states. Once fully discharged, immediately eligible to re-register.
  • PHOTO ID REQUIRED to vote in Georgia: Georgia driver's license or ID; any Georgia or out-of-state government ID; passport; military ID; employee ID from government entity; or any government document showing name/address. Free Georgia Voter ID Card available at no charge.
  • Georgia absentee/mail voting: no excuse required - any registered voter may vote by mail.
  • ACTIVE VOTER STATUS: Georgia purges "inactive" voters from active rolls after 5 years without contact with the election office; check My Voter Page to confirm active status.
  • Georgia is a closed primary state for some primaries - party registration may affect primary voting rights.
  • Polls open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
