Jefferson County, Idaho
On the upper Snake River Plain east of Idaho Falls, Jefferson County is potato and dairy farming country at its most elemental - a landscape of irrigated fields, volcanic soil, and the kind of agricultural productivity that makes no headlines but feeds a continent.

Office: Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office – 200 Courthouse Way, Rigby, ID 83442 | (208) 745-9210 | Fax (208) 745-9212; Sheriff Steve Anderson.
Notes: For an active emergency, call 911. Jefferson County’s first sheriff, Edward John Harrop, appointed by Governor John Haines in 1913-1914, was previously the Fremont County sheriff (before Jefferson County was carved out of it) and was remembered by his family as “widely known and highly respected.” He famously once tracked and captured two horse thieves on horseback all the way to St. Anthony.

ROADS & TRANSPORTATION
Roads: US-20 serves Rigby, the county seat, part of the Idaho Falls metro area.
Notes: Jefferson County was officially created February 18, 1913, when Governor John Haines signed the enabling legislation; residents approved the county’s formation and voted for Rigby as county seat in a special election held November 4, 1913. The Utah and Northern Railroad’s 1880 expansion, followed by the Yellowstone Branch reaching Rigby in 1900, was central to the county’s early economic development.

BUILDING & PERMITS
Office: Jefferson County Courthouse – 134 N. Clark, Rigby, ID (built 1938, Art Deco, one of three nearly identical Idaho county courthouses by the same architect; National Register of Historic Places since 1987).
Notes: Rigby holds genuinely world-changing historical significance: it is widely recognized as the “Birthplace of Television,” honoring Philo Taylor Farnsworth, who as a Rigby High School student and Jefferson County resident sketched his first blueprints for electronic television – reportedly conceived while plowing potato fields as a teenager – before going on to invent the vacuum tube television display. Original tubes from his early experiments, once displayed at Rigby High School, are now held at the Jefferson County Museum, and a section of the former Yellowstone Highway through town is named in his honor. Jefferson County is also genuinely unusual in holding two separate annual county fairs.

About Jefferson County
Jefferson County carries a historical claim that residents find genuinely satisfying: Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of electronic television, was born in Indian Creek in what is now Jefferson County in 1906. Farnsworth’s television invention – demonstrated in 1927 in San Francisco – is arguably the most consequential technical innovation of the twentieth century in terms of its cultural impact, and the fact that it originated in the mind of a boy from Idaho’s agricultural plains is a story worth knowing. A historical marker and local museum celebrate the connection.
The county’s economy is straightforwardly agricultural: potatoes, grain, and dairy operations in the Snake River Plain’s volcanic-soil, aquifer-irrigated terrain. The Menan Buttes – a pair of tuff cones rising from the Snake River Plain – are one of Idaho’s more unusual geological features and are accessible as a hiking destination. Jefferson County’s proximity to Idaho Falls (Bonneville County) gives residents access to regional retail, healthcare, and employment without the county itself needing to develop its own urban infrastructure. The county’s LDS church community predominance shapes its social character and contributes to unusually strong volunteer and community networks.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Jefferson County Magistrate Court 134 North Clark Street, P.O. Box 389, Rigby, ID 83442 (208) 745-6313
Jefferson County was established in 1913, named for Thomas Jefferson. The 1938 Jefferson County Courthouse (Art Deco, National Register of Historic Places) was one of three nearly identical courthouses in the region.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Idaho has adopted the Uniform Probate Code (Idaho Code Title 15). Idaho is also a community property state. Idaho recognizes four main paths:
Small Estate Affidavit – a non-court process for estates with a total value of $100,000 or less (excluding liens and encumbrances) and no real property. Available 30 days after death. No court filing required (Idaho Code § 15-3-1201).
Summary Administration – available when the value of all the decedent’s property is less than the homestead allowance, exempt property, and last-illness medical expenses combined, or when a surviving spouse is sole beneficiary (Idaho Code §§ 15-3-1203, 15-3-1205).
Informal Probate – the most common track for uncontested estates, handled through the court registrar.
Formal Probate – court-supervised proceedings required when disputes arise or the will is contested.
Step 2: filing
For informal probate with a will, file an Application for Informal Probate of Will and Appointment of Personal Representative with the Magistrate Division.
For formal probate, file a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Personal Representative (or the equivalent for intestate estates).
Idaho does not have a statutory fee schedule for attorneys or personal representatives – fees must be reasonable given the services rendered and complexity.
If formal or informal probate is needed
Determine whether small estate affidavit, summary administration, or full probate applies.
File the appropriate application or petition with the Jefferson County Magistrate Court.
Under informal proceedings, the registrar reviews the application without a hearing. Under formal proceedings, a judge holds a hearing.
The personal representative accepts the appointment and may need to post a bond.
Once appointed, the court issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration. Obtain several certified copies.
Publish notice to creditors as required.
Mail notice to all heirs, beneficiaries, and interested parties.
Marshal assets, obtain an EIN, open an estate account, pay valid debts and expenses, and prepare any required inventory.
Distribute remaining assets per the will or Idaho’s intestacy statutes, then close the estate.
What it costs
Idaho does not impose its own state estate or inheritance tax.
Idaho does not have a statutory fee schedule for attorneys or personal representatives.
Court filing fees and publication costs are separate – confirm current amounts with the Jefferson County Magistrate Court.
Probate in Idaho typically takes 6-12 months for uncontested estates.
