DeKalb County, Illinois
DeKalb County invented barbed wire, and that unglamorous fact - a patent filed in 1874 by Joseph Glidden that changed the American West forever - says something true about a county that has always found practical solutions to large problems, including the problem of building a genuine university town on the Illinois prairie.

Notes: DeKalb County is genuinely the birthplace of modern barbed wire, a world-changing agricultural innovation. Joseph Glidden, a DeKalb farmer, received the 1874 patent for the double-strand barbed wire design still in common use today, earning an estimated $1,000,000 in royalties before his patent expired in 1892 and becoming one of the richest men in America. In a delightful local detail, Glidden himself served as DeKalb County Sheriff from 1852 to 1854, years before his invention. He partnered with businessman Isaac L. Ellwood to found the Barb Fence Company; a third local competitor, German immigrant carpenter Jacob Haish, also pioneered his own barbed wire design in DeKalb around the same period. Glidden and Ellwood later played a substantial role in founding the state teachers college that became Northern Illinois University (established 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School, renamed NIU in 1957), donating land for the campus. DeKalb also played a leading national role in developing commercial hybrid corn beginning in 1934, and the DeKalb Municipal Band, founded 1854, claims to be Illinois’s oldest continuously operating city band. DeKalb is the hometown of supermodel Cindy Crawford.

About DeKalb County
DeKalb County is northern Illinois’s barbed wire invention and university county – Joseph Glidden’s 1874 innovation that fenced the American West and Northern Illinois University’s campus in DeKalb define a county at the edge of the Chicago suburban zone where corn belt agriculture and college-town character coexist with the expanding metropolitan influence of the nation’s third-largest city.
Sycamore (the county seat, population ~18,000) is DeKalb County’s governmental hub, while DeKalb (population ~44,000) serves as the county’s commercial and university center – a northern Illinois community balancing agricultural heritage, higher education, and Chicago exurban growth.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.

Hours: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. DeKalb County is home to Northern Illinois University. The 1905 DeKalb County Courthouse (Classical Revival, National Register of Historic Places) still serves as the county’s primary judicial center.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Illinois has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code and is not a community property state – it follows common law property principles. Illinois probate is governed by the Probate Act of 1975 (755 ILCS 5/). Two main paths:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where personal property (excluding real estate) is valued at $150,000 or less (raised from $100,000 effective August 15, 2025), with no unresolved debts or claims and no real estate involved. No formal court probate is required.
Formal Probate (Independent or Supervised Administration) – required when the estate doesn’t qualify for the small estate affidavit. Most Illinois probate cases proceed under Independent Administration, letting the estate representative act without prior court approval for most routine actions.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File the decedent’s original will (if one exists) with the DeKalb County Circuit Clerk, where the decedent resided at death.
Petition the court to open the estate and appoint an executor (if there’s a will) or an administrator (if intestate).
The court issues Letters of Office (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration) appointing the representative.
Publish notice to creditors and unknown heirs as required by Illinois law.
Under Independent Administration, the representative marshals assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes the remaining estate without needing court approval for each step.
File a final accounting or closing documents to formally close the estate.
What it costs
Illinois imposes its own state estate tax on estates valued above $4 million, with rates up to 16%. There is no Illinois inheritance tax.
Filing fees vary by county – confirm current amounts with the DeKalb County Circuit Clerk.
Most uncontested probate proceedings in Illinois can be completed within about a year.
