How do I get a marriage license?

Circuit Court Clerk / Superior Court Clerk (county level - each of Indiana's 92 counties)
Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Both parties appear in person at the County Circuit or Superior Court Clerk's office (most counties require both; some allow online pre-application at mycourts.in.gov/mlpublic)
  2. Both parties present valid government-issued photo ID
  3. Provide Social Security numbers for both parties; address on ID must be current (if not, bring a current bill or bank statement with correct address); provide parents' names and places of birth; if previously married, provide exact date divorce was finalized or date of spouse's death
  4. Pay the fee and receive license immediately - no waiting period; can marry same day
  5. Get married within 60 days - license expires after 60 days
  6. Officiant returns the completed marriage license to the issuing county Clerk's office after the ceremony for recording
