How do I register to vote or check my registration?

Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Indiana resident in your precinct for at least 30 days before Election Day, at least 18 years old by the next general, municipal, or special election, and not currently imprisoned after being convicted of a crime
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: indianavoters.in.gov - requires valid Indiana driver's license or state-issued ID number
  4. BY MAIL: Download Indiana Voter Registration Form (VRG-7) at in.gov/sos/elections; complete, sign, and mail to your County Clerk - must be received (not just postmarked) 29 days before Election Day
  5. IN PERSON: County Voter Registration Office or Clerk; BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles) license branch during credential transactions; public assistance offices
  6. Submit registration by the deadline: 29 days before Election Day
  7. Receive voter registration card by mail confirming enrollment and listing your polling place

Moving between Indiana counties: re-register in new county. Marion County (Indianapolis): register at Indianapolis Election Board office - (317) 327-5100. Important state-specific details

  • Indiana has NO same-day voter registration and NO no-excuse absentee voting - stricter than most states.
  • FELONY CONVICTION: Indiana requires you not be CURRENTLY IMPRISONED after conviction - once released from prison (including parole), you may register and vote immediately in Indiana.
  • PHOTO ID REQUIRED to vote in Indiana: Indiana driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, employee ID from U.S. or Indiana government entity - if no photo ID, may cast a provisional ballot and appear at County Election Board within 10 days to verify identity or sign an affidavit.
  • Indiana BMV automatically offers voter registration during license/ID transactions.
  • Indiana only uses the VRG-7 and VRG-11 forms - older versions of these forms are NOT accepted; download current versions from in.gov/sos/elections only.
  • Polls open 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
