Indiana County
Parke County, Indiana
Covered bridge capital of the world - from Parke County's 31 historic covered bridges (no county in the United States has more covered bridges than Parke County, and the annual Covered Bridge Festival each October draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the county's scenic Sugar Creek valley, making it one of Indiana's largest annual events) to the county's rugged west-central Indiana terrain (Parke County's forested hills and Sugar Creek corridor offer a scenic landscape that contrasts sharply with the flat agricultural plains of most of Indiana, supporting tourism, outdoor recreation, and small-scale farming).

Notes: Parke County is genuinely, unambiguously the “Covered Bridge Capital of the World” – it claims more covered bridges than any other county in the United States. At its peak the county held as many as 53 covered bridges, mostly built of poplar wood in the Burr Arch style by master builders J.J. Daniels, J.A. Britton, William Hendricks, and Henry Wolf; 31 survive today, all listed together on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 as a Multiple Property Submission. The Jackson Covered Bridge is Indiana’s longest single-span covered bridge, and the Portland Mills Covered Bridge is the county’s oldest. Rockville’s own J.J. Daniels, one of Indiana’s most prolific bridge builders, moved permanently to the town in 1861 and built the 207-foot Jackson Bridge over Sugar Creek that same year. Since 1957, the county has hosted the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival each October – ten days spanning ten towns (Rockville, Bellmore, Bridgeton, Bloomingdale, Mansfield, Montezuma, Mecca, Rosedale, Tangier, and Billie Creek Village) – now Indiana’s largest festival and the largest covered bridge festival in the nation, during which the county’s population reportedly triples.

About Parke County
Parke County is west-central Indiana’s covered bridge capital – with more historic covered bridges than any county in the nation and the annual Covered Bridge Festival drawing massive crowds each fall, Parke County has built a tourism identity around its remarkable collection of 19th-century wooden bridges spanning the Sugar Creek and its tributaries.
Rockville (the county seat, population ~2,400) anchors Parke County’s governmental functions and serves as the festival hub each October when the Covered Bridge Festival transforms the small city into one of Indiana’s premier autumn destinations.

Where to go
Parke County Circuit Court 116 West High Street, Room 201, Rockville, IN 47872 (765) 569-5671
Parke County is known as the “Covered Bridge Capital of the World,” home to more historic covered bridges than any other county in the United States.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Indiana has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code – probate is governed by Indiana Code Title 29. Indiana offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the gross probate estate (less liens, encumbrances, and funeral expenses) is $100,000 or less. Available 45 days after death. The affidavit must be signed and recorded with the county recorder’s office before a personal representative is appointed. No court filing is required.
Devolution of Real Estate Affidavit – a separate affidavit specifically for transferring real property, available 7 months after death, with no value limit on the real estate, recorded with the county recorder.
Unsupervised Administration – a simplified probate track available when the estate is solvent and all inheritors agree; fewer court appearances and filings than supervised administration.
Supervised Administration – full court oversight, used for contested, complex, or insolvent estates.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and for Issuance of Letters (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Appointment of Personal Representative (if intestate) with the Parke County Circuit Court.
The court reviews the will for compliance with Indiana Code § 29-1-5-3 (in writing, signed by the testator, witnessed by at least 2 credible witnesses).
The court issues Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (intestate) appointing the personal representative.
Publish notice to creditors; creditors generally have a limited window (commonly 3 months from first publication) to file claims.
The personal representative marshals assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and distributes the estate.
File a closing statement or final accounting to formally close the estate.
What it costs
Indiana does not have a state estate or inheritance tax.
Filing fees vary by county – confirm current amounts with the Parke County Circuit Court.
Indiana has no statutory fee schedule for attorneys or personal representatives – fees must be “reasonable” and are subject to court approval.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit – a minimum 45-day wait; Unsupervised Administration – roughly 6-9 months if uncontested; Supervised Administration – 9-12+ months.
