Kansas County
Allen County, Kansas
Iola's Elm Creek Park and the Neosho River gas fields - from Iola's natural gas heritage (Allen County sits atop the Mid-Continent Natural Gas Field - the discovery of natural gas in the 1890s fueled a brief industrial boom in Iola before the fields declined, leaving behind the spectacular ruins of the Portland Cement Company plant that once employed thousands) to the Lehigh Portland Cement ruins (the massive 1908 cement plant ruins on the Neosho River are one of southeastern Kansas's most dramatic industrial heritage sites, their brick towers visible for miles across the prairie) and Humboldt's Norman Borlaug connection.

Notes: Iola was the epicenter of a dramatic natural gas boom that reshaped southeastern Kansas. A major well struck by the Allen County Gas Company on December 25, 1893 tapped into what briefly became one of North America’s largest natural gas fields, launching the “Mid-Continent gas field.” Iola’s population exploded from roughly 1,567 in 1895 to more than 11,000 by 1904, as cheap abundant gas drew zinc smelters, cement plants, brick works, glass factories, and foundries to the area. The boom faded by 1910-12 due to overuse and inadequate reservoir management, but it permanently reshaped the region’s industrial base. The historic Old Allen County Jail (built 1869, the county’s first public building) is on the National Register of Historic Places and now operates as a museum run by the Allen County Historical Society.

About Allen County
Allen County is southeastern Kansas’s natural gas boom and Portland Cement ruins county – Iola’s brief 1890s gas boom produced one of the most dramatic industrial ruins on the Kansas plains.
Iola (the county seat, population ~5,300) experienced a natural gas boom in the 1890s that attracted cement manufacturing and other industries. The Lehigh Portland Cement Company’s massive 1908 plant – abandoned in 1922 – left a landscape of brick towers and ruins that has become one of Kansas’s most unusual industrial heritage sites.
Humboldt (population ~1,800) is where Norman Borlaug – winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for developing high-yield wheat varieties that launched the Green Revolution – grew up, though he was born in Iowa.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Allen County District Court 1 North Washington Avenue, Room B, Iola, KS 66749 (620) 365-1425
Allen County’s seat, Iola, has served as county seat since 1865. The 1957-1958 Allen County Courthouse (Modern style) is the current building, situated along the Neosho River in southeast Kansas.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Allen County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
