Kansas County
Cherokee County, Kansas
Route 66's Kansas segment and Galena's Cars inspiration - from Route 66's Kansas passage through Cherokee County (Route 66 passes through only 13 miles of Kansas - entirely within Cherokee County - but those 13 miles contain some of the most authentic remaining Mother Road experience including the Rainbow Curve Bridge, the Cars on the Route station in Galena that inspired Ramone's House of Body Art in the Pixar film Cars, and Baxter Springs' military history) to the Tri-State Mining District's Cherokee County zinc and lead heritage.

Roads & Utilities
ROADS & TRANSPORTATION
Roads: US-160 and US-69 serve Columbus, the county seat, in the far southeastern corner of Kansas near the Missouri and Oklahoma borders. Historic Route 66 passes through Baxter Springs – the largest of only three Kansas communities on the Mother Road (13.2 miles of Route 66 cross the state).
Notes: Cherokee County was organized in 1866, first named McGee in 1855 and renamed for the large portion of “Cherokee neutral lands” included within its boundaries. Columbus has been the county seat since 1868.
Business & Permits
BUILDING & PERMITS
Office: Cherokee County Courthouse – 110 W. Maple Street, Columbus, KS (built 1955-56, Modern style; the clock from the 1888 courthouse stands preserved beside the entrance).
Notes: Baxter Springs holds a genuine claim as “The First Cowtown in Kansas” – the earliest terminus for post-Civil War Texas cattle drives along the Shawnee Trail, before Kansas legislators pushed the trade further west to control tick fever. It’s also the site of the Battle of Baxter Springs (the “Baxter Springs Massacre”), fought October 6, 1863, when William Quantrill’s Confederate guerrillas ambushed a Union detachment near Fort Baxter, killing over 100 soldiers and civilians in one of the deadliest engagements of Quantrill’s career – an event historians consider “the zenith” of his brutal campaign. The Baxter Springs Historical Museum, built on the site of the attack, interprets both this Civil War history and the town’s cattle-trail heritage.

About Cherokee County
Cherokee County is Kansas’s Route 66 county – all 13 miles of Route 66 in Kansas pass through Cherokee County, including Galena’s abandoned Kan-O-Tex station that inspired the Pixar film Cars.
Galena (population ~2,700) has one of Route 66’s most celebrated individual landmarks – the Kan-O-Tex service station, restored as Cars on the Route, was the inspiration for Ramone’s House of Body Art in Pixar’s Cars. The town’s four retired tow trucks, including one named Tow Mater, seal the connection.
Baxter Springs (population ~3,600) was the site of the 1863 Baxter Springs Massacre, where Confederate guerrilla William Quantrill ambushed a Union escort.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Cherokee County District Court, 11th Judicial District 110 West Maple Street, Columbus, KS 66725 (620) 429-9500, option 1
Cherokee County is in Kansas’s extreme southeastern corner, in the historic Tri-State Mining District (lead and zinc) shared with Missouri and Oklahoma.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Cherokee County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
