How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Kansas resident, at least 18 years old by the next election, have completed all terms of any felony sentence (including parole and probation), and not claim the right to vote elsewhere
  2. Choose your registration method:

  4. BY MAIL: Download Kansas voter registration form from sos.ks.gov; complete, sign, and mail to your County Election Office - must be received 21 days before Election Day
  5. IN PERSON: County Election Office or County Clerk's office; Kansas DOT driver's license offices; various government assistance offices - deadline 21 days before Election Day
  6. Submit registration at least 21 days before Election Day
  7. Receive certificate of registration confirming enrollment; check for errors immediately

Important state-specific details

  • Kansas registration closes 21 days before any election - plan ahead; no same-day registration.
  • PRESIDENT-ONLY BALLOT: Kansas's unique provision allows late registrants to vote only for President if registered by noon the day before a general election held at least 45 days after they become a Kansas resident.
  • PHOTO ID REQUIRED to vote in Kansas: Kansas driver's license or non-driver ID (with or without expiration date), U.S. passport, or military ID. If no qualifying photo ID, may obtain a free Kansas ID at county election office. Expiration date does not need to be shown, but if shown, must not be expired.
  • NO-EXCUSE ADVANCE VOTING: Kansas allows any registered voter to vote by mail (advance ballot) without providing a reason; apply through County Election Office.
  • FELONY CONVICTION: Voting rights restored upon completion of ALL terms of sentence including imprisonment, parole, probation, and conditional release; must re-register; signing a false registration affidavit (claiming restored rights before completion) is itself a felony.
  • Polls open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM; anyone in line at closing must be allowed to vote.
