Notes: Wyandotte County is home to a genuinely significant and moving historical site: the Wyandot National Burying Ground (formerly known as the Huron Indian Cemetery), located at 7th Street Trafficway and Minnesota Avenue in downtown Kansas City. Established around 1843, soon after roughly 664 Wyandot people arrived in Kansas following forced removal from Ohio – 60 to 100 of whom died of illness during the journey and were buried on a high ridge overlooking the rivers – the cemetery became the sacred resting place for a nation that would later split between a federally recognized Wyandotte Nation based in Oklahoma and a smaller, then-unrecognized Wyandot Nation of Kansas. In the early 1900s, when the burial ground faced repeated threats of sale for commercial redevelopment, Wyandot descendant and attorney Eliza “Lyda” Burton Conley – one of the first Native American women admitted to practice law, and the first Native American woman admitted to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court – led a fierce, decades-long legal and physical campaign alongside her sisters Ida and Helena to protect it, at times literally patrolling and camping at the cemetery to prevent its sale. Their efforts ultimately succeeded: the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.

About Wyandotte County
Wyandotte County is Kansas’s fourth most populous county and the 387th most populous in the United States. In 1997, the county and Kansas City, Kansas consolidated into the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas – one of the most significant city-county consolidations in recent American history, merging services and reducing administrative redundancy.
Kansas City, Kansas (KCK) (population ~156,000) is Wyandotte County’s primary community and the Unified Government’s urban center – a working-class, highly diverse city directly across the Missouri-Kansas state line from Kansas City, Missouri. KCK has historically been overshadowed by its larger Missouri counterpart, but significant investment since the Unified Government’s formation has transformed several areas.
The Village West district – developed from scratch in the northwestern county on former agricultural land – is the Unified Government’s signature economic development achievement. Kansas Speedway (opened 2001, NASCAR Cup Series track), Children’s Mercy Park (home of Sporting Kansas City MLS soccer), Scheels All Sports, Cabela’s, and the Legends Outlets Kansas City have created a major entertainment and retail complex that draws visitors from across the Kansas City metro and generates significant tax revenue.
The Strawberry Hill neighborhood in KCK preserves extraordinary Croatian, Slovenian, and Eastern European heritage from the early 20th-century immigrant settlement – one of the most distinct ethnic neighborhoods in the Kansas City metro.
Bonner Springs and Edwardsville are smaller communities in the county’s western reaches with more suburban and small-town character.
KCK’s demographics reflect substantial Hispanic and African American populations – the city is one of the most diverse in Kansas, with a strong Mexican American community in the Armourdale and Turner neighborhoods.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Wyandotte County District Court, 29th Judicial District 710 North 7th Street, Mezzanine, Kansas City, KS 66101 (913) 573-2946
Wyandotte County is a consolidated city-county government (Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas), named for the Wyandot people.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Wyandotte County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
