Louisiana Notes
Important state-specific details
- Louisiana registration closes 30 days before any election - plan ahead; no same-day registration.
- ABSENTEE VOTING: Louisiana has restrictive absentee requirements - excuse is required for mail ballots; early in-person voting (no excuse) is the more accessible option.
- PHOTO ID REQUIRED to vote in Louisiana: Louisiana driver's license/ID, U.S. military ID, U.S. passport, U.S. military dependent ID, Louisiana special ID, or voter registration card (the registration card itself counts as ID in Louisiana).
- CLOSED PRIMARIES: Louisiana uses a "jungle primary" (nonpartisan blanket primary) for most elections - all candidates appear on one ballot regardless of party; if no candidate wins 50%, the top two advance to a runoff. This is NOT a traditional closed primary.
- FELONY CONVICTION: Voting rights suspended during imprisonment AND while on probation or parole for a felony conviction; automatically restored upon completion of sentence (incarceration, parole, and probation). Must re-register after rights are restored. Check Louisiana Secretary of State for current status of rights.
- PRE-REGISTRATION: Available at age 17 for those who will be 18 by Election Day.
- Polls open 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
