Notes: Hancock County is home to Acadia National Park, genuinely the first national park established east of the Mississippi River. In 1901, Harvard President Charles Eliot formed the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations to preserve land on Mount Desert Island; those trustees donated roughly 5,000-6,000 acres to the federal government, which President Woodrow Wilson designated as Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916, then Lafayette National Park in 1919 (renamed Acadia in 1929). John D. Rockefeller Jr. later funded the park’s famous network of carriage roads. Today Acadia spans nearly 49,000 acres across Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic Peninsula, and Isle au Haut, drawing roughly 3.3-4 million visitors annually – one of the top ten most-visited national parks in the country.

About Hancock County
Hancock County contains one of the most celebrated landscapes in the eastern United States – Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park – drawing over 3.5 million visitors annually and making Bar Harbor one of the most visited small towns in New England.
Acadia National Park – established in 1919 as the first national park east of the Mississippi River – protects the pink granite peaks, fjord-like Somes Sound, and rocky coastline of Mount Desert Island and adjacent smaller islands. Cadillac Mountain (1,532 feet) is the highest point on the eastern seaboard north of Brazil and, for much of the year, the first place in the United States where the sun rises. The carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in the early 20th century – 45 miles of broken-stone carriage roads with 17 unique stone bridges, built at Rockefeller’s personal expense and donated to the park – are one of the finest examples of philanthropic landscape engineering in American history.
Bar Harbor (population ~5,500 year-round, swelling to 50,000+ in summer with cruise ship visitors) is the island’s commercial hub – a town of Victorian hotels, lobster restaurants, whale-watching boats, and a downtown that can feel overwhelmed by summer tourism. The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) – a world-leading genetics research institution founded in 1929 that produced the first inbred mouse strains used in cancer research – is Bar Harbor’s most significant scientific institution and a major employer.
Blue Hill, Castine, and the Deer Isle communities (connected to the mainland by the famous Deer Isle suspension bridge, built 1939) are the county’s quieter, more authentic communities – particularly cherished by artists, craftspeople, and those seeking a less touristic Maine experience. The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle is one of the premier craft education institutions in the United States, drawing artists from around the world.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Hancock County Registry of Probate 50 State Street, Suite 6, Ellsworth, ME 04605 (207) 667-8434
Hancock County is on Maine’s Downeast coast, seated in Ellsworth, and includes Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Maine adopted the Uniform Probate Code effective July 1, 2019 (Title 18-C), replacing the prior Title 18-A. Maine is one of fewer than 20 UPC states, so its informal/formal probate tracks and terminology follow the uniform model used elsewhere.
Collection of Personal Property by Affidavit (Small Estate Affidavit) – under 18-C §3-1201, available when the estate’s personal property value is below a threshold that’s adjusted annually for inflation. No probate case or personal representative appointment is required; a successor can present a sworn affidavit directly to banks or others holding the decedent’s property. Each county’s Probate Court publishes the current year’s threshold on its website.
Informal Probate – the path most Maine estates use. Available when the will (if any) is uncontested, the estate is straightforward, and no interested party objects. A Probate Registrar (not a judge) reviews and approves the application without a hearing.
Formal Probate – required when a will is contested, the personal representative appointment is disputed, or supervised administration is requested. These matters go before the elected Judge of Probate at a hearing.
Step 2: filing for probate
For informal probate with a will, file Form DE-201(I) (Application for Informal Probate of Will or Appointment of Personal Representative); for informal intestate proceedings (no will), file Form DE-101(I) – both with the Probate Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled. Applications cannot be filed earlier than 5 days after death.
In informal probate, the Register reviews the application and, if in order, issues a Statement of Informal Probate and Letters appointing the personal representative – no hearing required.
The personal representative must file an inventory of estate assets with the court within 3 months of appointment.
Notice to creditors must be published once a week for 2 successive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the county, and the personal representative must mail written notice to known creditors within 4 months of appointment (18-C §3-801).
The personal representative pays valid debts and taxes in priority order, then distributes remaining assets and files a final accounting to close the estate.
What it costs
Filing fees are based on estate value, set by each county’s fee schedule.
Publication costs for the creditor notice typically run in the low hundreds of dollars.
Maine does not set a statutory percentage fee for attorneys or personal representatives; fees must be “reasonable” based on the time and complexity of the work involved.
While not legally required, hiring an attorney is commonly recommended, especially for formal probate or if the estate is at all complex.
