Notes: Traverse City is genuinely, world-famously the “Cherry Capital of the World” – the surrounding Grand Traverse region produces roughly 70% of the entire United States’ tart (Montmorency) cherry supply, thanks to Lake Michigan’s temperature-moderating effect on the local orchards, first planted by pioneers in the mid-19th century. The National Cherry Festival, which began as a small 1910 “Blessing of the Blossoms” ceremony and was formally established in 1925, has been held nearly every year since (with WWII-era and 2020 cancellations), drawing over 500,000 visitors across its eight days and generating tens of millions of dollars in regional economic impact; President Gerald Ford, a Michigan native, led the festival’s Cherry Royale Parade as Grand Marshal in 1975. On July 25, 1987, festival participants set the Guinness World Record for the largest cherry pie ever baked – 17 feet 6 inches in diameter and weighing 28,350 pounds.

About Grand Traverse County
Grand Traverse County is northern Michigan’s most significant county and the 601st most populous in the United States, covering 468 square miles of the Lower Peninsula’s northwestern tip between Grand Traverse Bay’s East and West arms.
Traverse City (the county seat, population ~15,000) is consistently ranked among the most beautiful small cities in the United States and among the best places to live in Michigan by significant margins. Positioned at the southern tip of Grand Traverse Bay at the 45th parallel – halfway between the equator and the North Pole – Traverse City enjoys exceptional natural beauty with the bay’s blue waters, surrounding hills, and the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes. The city’s Front Street downtown, Boardman Lake, and the waterfront have attracted significant restaurant, retail, and cultural investment that makes Traverse City feel cosmopolitan for a city of 15,000.
The National Cherry Festival – held annually in early July for over 90 years – is one of Michigan’s most beloved summer events, celebrating the cherry industry that has defined the region’s agricultural identity. Michigan produces about 70% of the US tart cherry crop, and Grand Traverse County’s Old Mission Peninsula and adjacent Leelanau County are the heart of this production.
The Old Mission Peninsula – a 19-mile-long finger of land dividing Grand Traverse Bay’s two arms – is recognized as one of the world’s premier cherry and wine grape growing regions, positioned exactly on the 45th parallel with lake-moderated temperatures ideal for both crops. The peninsula’s wineries – Chateau Grand Traverse, Peninsula Cellars, and others – produce award-winning Riesling, Pinot Noir, and cherry wine.
Interlochen Center for the Arts – located 15 miles southwest of Traverse City – is one of the most prestigious arts boarding schools in the world, annually graduating musicians, dancers, theater artists, and visual artists who consistently enter the world’s top conservatories and universities. The adjacent Interlochen Public Radio (IPR) is northern Michigan’s cultural radio anchor.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Grand Traverse County Probate Court Robert P. Griffin Hall of Justice, 280 Washington Street, Suite 223, Traverse City, MI 49684 (231) 922-4791
Grand Traverse County was founded 1840, organized 1851, named for Grand Traverse Bay, seated in Traverse City – the most populous county in Northern Michigan.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Michigan probate is governed by the Estates and Protected Individuals Code (EPIC), MCL 700.1101 et seq.
Transfer by Affidavit (Small Estate Affidavit) – under MCL 700.3982/700.3983, available when the estate’s gross value (after funeral and burial expenses) doesn’t exceed a threshold that’s adjusted annually for inflation (roughly $50,000-$53,000 in recent years). No real estate can be involved. At least 28 days must pass after death before this affidavit can be used. The affidavit isn’t filed with the court; it’s presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for instance), along with a death certificate.
Petition and Order for Assignment (PC 556) – a small estate process for estates at or below the same statutory threshold, but this one CAN include real property. An heir or the person who paid the funeral bill files this petition with the probate court; the judge reviews and signs the order, and there’s a filing fee plus a statutory inventory fee based on estate value.
Informal Probate – the standard track for most estates above the small-estate threshold. Filed using Application for Informal Probate and/or Appointment of Personal Representative (PC 558); the court issues Letters of Authority (PC 573) to the personal representative without a hearing when the application is straightforward.
Formal/Supervised Administration – required when the will is contested, there’s a dispute over who should serve as personal representative, or the estate needs ongoing court supervision.
Step 2: filing for probate
Gather the death certificate, the will (if any), and an inventory of the decedent’s assets to determine which path fits.
File the appropriate petition or application with the Probate Court in the county where the decedent lived.
For informal probate, the court reviews the application and issues Letters of Authority appointing the personal representative, typically without a hearing.
The personal representative gathers and inventories assets, notifies and pays valid creditors, and – no earlier than 12 months after appointment – files a Sworn Closing Statement (PC 584) for informal probate, or a Petition for Complete Settlement (PC 585) followed by a court Order of Complete Settlement (PC 586) for formal administration.
What it costs
Michigan probate generally runs 7 to 18 months and costs roughly 3% to 7% of the estate’s value in typical cases.
Filing fees vary by petition type; a statutory inventory fee, set by MCL 600.871, is calculated based on the estate’s total value and applies to most probate filings.
Michigan does not require an attorney for probate, though many people use one for anything beyond a very simple estate.
