Notes: Kalamazoo is genuinely nicknamed the “Celery City” – in 1856, Scottish immigrant George Taylor introduced celery cultivation to the area, and Dutch immigrant farmers later transformed the region’s rich glacial muck soil into major celery-farming operations that made Kalamazoo world-famous for the crop by the early 1900s. The city is also the birthplace of Gibson Guitars, Checker Motors (maker of the iconic Checker taxi cab), and Shakespeare fishing rods, and was long home to the Upjohn Company pharmaceutical manufacturer (predecessor to Pharmacia and later Pfizer operations) and today Stryker Corporation, a global medical technology leader. Kalamazoo gained national attention for the 2005 “Kalamazoo Promise,” an anonymously funded scholarship program guaranteeing full or partial college tuition to graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools, credited with reversing years of enrollment decline in the district.

About Kalamazoo County
Kalamazoo County is home to a mid-sized Michigan city whose national profile has been shaped by two very different but equally powerful stories: the Kalamazoo Promise scholarship program and the city’s extraordinary pharmaceutical heritage.
The Kalamazoo Promise – announced in November 2005 by a group of anonymous donors – is one of the most significant local educational philanthropy initiatives in American history. The program pays 100% of college tuition at Michigan public universities and community colleges for any graduate of Kalamazoo Public Schools who has attended since kindergarten. The Promise has been credited with reversing population decline in Kalamazoo’s public school enrollment, attracting families to the city specifically for the scholarship, and inspiring similar “Promise” programs in dozens of other cities and states across the nation. The donors – long anonymous, now known to include among them the chairman of Stryker Corporation – have made Kalamazoo a national model for place-based educational philanthropy.
Pfizer has operated pharmaceutical manufacturing in Kalamazoo since 1950 – its Michigan operations (including the major Portage facility adjacent to Kalamazoo) have been central to Pfizer’s global production network. Kalamazoo-area Pfizer facilities produced penicillin for the Allied forces in World War II, Terramycin (one of the early broad-spectrum antibiotics), and more recently played roles in COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing. Upjohn Company (founded in Kalamazoo in 1886, eventually merged into Pfizer) was for decades one of the most important pharmaceutical companies in the world and built Kalamazoo’s pharmaceutical identity. Stryker Corporation (orthopedic medical devices, Fortune 500, headquartered in Portage/Kalamazoo) is now the county’s largest private employer.
Bell’s Brewery – founded in Kalamazoo in 1985 by Larry Bell – is the birthplace of Michigan’s craft beer industry and one of the most respected regional craft breweries in the United States. Oberon Ale (Bell’s summer wheat ale) has become a Michigan seasonal cultural institution – its official release each spring marks the beginning of warm weather across the state. Bell’s was acquired by Kalamazoo-based Lark Hotels and Kalamazoo Brewing Co. in 2021.
Western Michigan University (WMU, enrollment ~20,000) is the county’s largest university – particularly strong in aviation, business, education, and engineering. The WMed School of Medicine (Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, funded significantly by a Stryker family gift) has added medical education to Kalamazoo’s healthcare ecosystem.
County government is an eleven-member Board of Commissioners with separately elected offices for the Clerk, Drain Commissioner, Prosecutor, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, and Treasurer.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Kalamazoo County Probate Court (Civil/Probate Division) 1536 Gull Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49048
Kalamazoo County is in southwestern Michigan, seated in Kalamazoo. In 2025, the Circuit Court’s Civil Division merged with the Probate Court to form a new Civil/Probate Division.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Michigan probate is governed by the Estates and Protected Individuals Code (EPIC), MCL 700.1101 et seq.
Transfer by Affidavit (Small Estate Affidavit) – under MCL 700.3982/700.3983, available when the estate’s gross value (after funeral and burial expenses) doesn’t exceed a threshold that’s adjusted annually for inflation (roughly $50,000-$53,000 in recent years). No real estate can be involved. At least 28 days must pass after death before this affidavit can be used. The affidavit isn’t filed with the court; it’s presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for instance), along with a death certificate.
Petition and Order for Assignment (PC 556) – a small estate process for estates at or below the same statutory threshold, but this one CAN include real property. An heir or the person who paid the funeral bill files this petition with the probate court; the judge reviews and signs the order, and there’s a filing fee plus a statutory inventory fee based on estate value.
Informal Probate – the standard track for most estates above the small-estate threshold. Filed using Application for Informal Probate and/or Appointment of Personal Representative (PC 558); the court issues Letters of Authority (PC 573) to the personal representative without a hearing when the application is straightforward.
Formal/Supervised Administration – required when the will is contested, there’s a dispute over who should serve as personal representative, or the estate needs ongoing court supervision.
Step 2: filing for probate
Gather the death certificate, the will (if any), and an inventory of the decedent’s assets to determine which path fits.
File the appropriate petition or application with the Probate Court in the county where the decedent lived.
For informal probate, the court reviews the application and issues Letters of Authority appointing the personal representative, typically without a hearing.
The personal representative gathers and inventories assets, notifies and pays valid creditors, and – no earlier than 12 months after appointment – files a Sworn Closing Statement (PC 584) for informal probate, or a Petition for Complete Settlement (PC 585) followed by a court Order of Complete Settlement (PC 586) for formal administration.
What it costs
Michigan probate generally runs 7 to 18 months and costs roughly 3% to 7% of the estate’s value in typical cases.
Filing fees vary by petition type; a statutory inventory fee, set by MCL 600.871, is calculated based on the estate’s total value and applies to most probate filings.
Michigan does not require an attorney for probate, though many people use one for anything beyond a very simple estate.
