Mississippi County
Leflore County, Mississippi
Greenwood - the Cotton Capital of the World and the site of Emmett Till's murder - from Greenwood's cotton market heritage (Greenwood was once the largest inland cotton market in the world - the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad's junction at the confluence of the Yazoo and Tallahatchie rivers made it the trading hub for the Delta's vast cotton plantations, and the city's antebellum and Victorian commercial buildings reflect the extraordinary wealth generated by cotton and enslaved labor) to the Emmett Till murder (the August 1955 abduction and brutal murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till from Money, in Leflore County, by Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam - and the acquittal of both men by an all-white jury - is one of the most consequential events in the history of the Civil Rights Movement, galvanizing the movement and defining the national conversation about racial justice).

Roads & Utilities
ROADS & TRANSPORTATION
Roads: US-82 and MS-7 serve Greenwood, the county seat, in the Mississippi Delta along the Yazoo River.
Notes: Leflore County was named for Greenwood LeFlore, the last principal chief of the Choctaw Nation in Mississippi, who signed the 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek ceding tribal lands while himself remaining and later living on roughly 15,000 acres of Delta land. About a third of the county’s workforce is employed in agriculture; Leflore historically ranked third in Mississippi in soybean production, fourth in rice, and fifth in cotton.

BUILDING & PERMITS
Office: Leflore County Courthouse – Greenwood, MS 38930; built 1906, Neoclassical style, on the county’s Main Street Historic District walking tour.
Notes: Leflore County carries deep and serious significance in American civil rights history. In August 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till, visiting relatives from Chicago, was abducted and killed in the Leflore County community of Money after an accusation made against him at a local store; his killers were acquitted by an all-white jury, and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley’s decision to hold an open-casket funeral is widely credited with galvanizing the national civil rights movement. A Mississippi Freedom Trail marker in Greenwood and a bronze memorial statue at Rail Spike Park commemorate Till and his family; the county was also a center of 1960s civil rights organizing, including voter registration drives and the site of Stokely Carmichael’s “Black Power” rally cry. On a separate note, Leflore County also carries major significance in blues history, with eight Mississippi Blues Trail markers recognizing figures connected to Greenwood including B.B. King and Robert Johnson. Cotton’s historical prominence led to the creation of the Museum of the Mississippi Delta (formerly the Cottonlandia Museum). Viking Range Corporation is headquartered in Greenwood.

About Leflore County
Leflore County is where Emmett Till was murdered – the 14-year-old’s 1955 abduction and killing from Money, Mississippi and the acquittal of his murderers galvanized the Civil Rights Movement and changed America, and the Cotton Capital of the World’s wealth was built on the same racial terror.
Greenwood (the county seat, population ~12,000) carries both the cotton heritage and the Emmett Till legacy – the Emmett Till Interpretive Center and the restored Cotton Street district define a Delta community reckoning with its history.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Leflore County Chancery Court P.O. Box 250, Greenwood, MS 38935 (662) 453-6203
Leflore County was founded 1871, named for Choctaw leader Greenwood LeFlore, in the Mississippi Delta, seated in Greenwood.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Mississippi has not adopted the Uniform Probate Code and instead follows its own statutory framework under Miss. Code Ann. Title 91, Chapter 7. Mississippi’s small-estate threshold, at $75,000, is one of the lowest in the country, so most estates end up needing at least some court involvement.
Small Estate Affidavit (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-322) – personal property only, up to $75,000 (excluding liens and encumbrances). A 30-day waiting period after death applies. The affidavit is presented directly to whoever holds the property (a bank, for instance); that party is not required to investigate the truth of the affidavit and is protected from liability once it complies.
Muniment of Title (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-5-35) – a limited proceeding to transfer real property named in a will, without full administration, when the estate’s non-real-estate assets are $75,000 or less and all debts (including taxes) have been paid. A petition is still filed with the Chancery Court to declare the will valid; the will and court order are then recorded in the land records.
Formal Administration – required for most estates with real property beyond the muniment-of-title threshold or significant liquid assets. The Chancery Judge reviews the petition, the will (if any), and supporting documents before issuing Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration appointing the personal representative.
Step 2: filing for probate
File a petition with the Chancery Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The personal representative inventories assets and notifies creditors; Mississippi’s creditor claim period runs 90 days (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-145).
Claims and disputes are adjudicated by the Chancery Court if contested.
Once debts are settled and the creditor period closes, the estate can be distributed and closed.
What it costs
Costs are the Chancery Clerk’s per-county filing fee (built on the statewide base under Miss. Code § 25-7-9), plus recording fees and publication costs.
Mississippi has no state estate tax or inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could separately apply, and only to very large estates.
