Mississippi County
Tunica County, Mississippi
Tunica casino resort corridor and Mississippi Delta - from Tunica's remarkable transformation from one of America's poorest counties to the Mid-South's casino capital (the arrival of casino gambling in the early 1990s transformed Tunica County almost overnight, with a strip of large resort casinos along the Mississippi River generating billions in revenue and making Tunica one of the top gaming destinations in the country outside of Nevada and New Jersey) to the county's Deep Delta agricultural landscape (away from the casino corridor, Tunica County retains the flat cotton and soybean fields of the Mississippi Delta, one of the most culturally significant agricultural landscapes in American history).

Roads & Utilities
ROADS & TRANSPORTATION
Roads: US-61 and I-69 serve the town of Tunica, the county seat, about 30 miles south of Memphis, TN, in the Mississippi Delta. Tunica Resorts (formerly Robinsonville), renamed in 2003, is home to the county’s casino corridor.
Notes: Tunica County’s transformation is genuinely one of the most dramatic economic turnarounds in American county history – often called the “Mississippi Miracle.” Until the early 1990s, Tunica County was widely cited as the poorest county in the nation; a neighborhood known as “Sugar Ditch Alley,” named for the open sewer running through it, was labeled America’s most impoverished neighborhood, and Rev. Jesse Jackson called it “the Ethiopia of North America” during a 1986 visit. Mississippi legalized riverboat gambling along the Mississippi River in 1990, and casino development began in 1995; Tunica Resorts quickly grew into the third-largest gaming destination in the United States, trailing only Las Vegas and Atlantic City, dramatically reshaping the county’s economy and tax base.

Office: Tunica County Courthouse – Tunica, MS 38676.
Notes: The Tunica Museum, founded 1997 and funded by casino gaming revenues, tells the county’s history from prehistoric times through the “Sugar Ditch” era to the casino boom, including 75 life masks of local blues musicians created by a blind artist, and directly addresses the region’s history of race relations. The Gateway to the Blues Museum, housed in a circa-1895 former train depot on Highway 61, serves as a visitor center. The Tunica RiverPark and Museum (built 2003) explores Mississippi River history from a striking three-story riverside building. The historic Hollywood Café, open since 1969, was immortalized in Marc Cohn’s song “Walking in Memphis” through its longtime pianist Muriel Wilkins.

About Tunica County
Tunica County is the northwest Mississippi Delta’s casino resort and cotton county – the gaming industry transformed this once impoverished Delta county into a regional entertainment destination while the surrounding flat Delta farmland maintains the cotton and soybean agriculture that defined the county’s economy for over a century before the casinos arrived.
Tunica (the county seat, population ~3,500) anchors the county’s governmental functions while the casino resort strip along the river draws visitors from across the Mid-South region.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Tunica County Chancery Court P.O. Box 217, Tunica, MS 38676 (662) 363-2451 Tunica County is in the Mississippi Delta on the Mississippi River, seated in Tunica.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Mississippi has not adopted the Uniform Probate Code and instead follows its own statutory framework under Miss. Code Ann. Title 91, Chapter 7. Mississippi’s small-estate threshold, at $75,000, is one of the lowest in the country, so most estates end up needing at least some court involvement.
Small Estate Affidavit (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-322) – personal property only, up to $75,000 (excluding liens and encumbrances). A 30-day waiting period after death applies. The affidavit is presented directly to whoever holds the property (a bank, for instance); that party is not required to investigate the truth of the affidavit and is protected from liability once it complies.
Muniment of Title (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-5-35) – a limited proceeding to transfer real property named in a will, without full administration, when the estate’s non-real-estate assets are $75,000 or less and all debts (including taxes) have been paid. A petition is still filed with the Chancery Court to declare the will valid; the will and court order are then recorded in the land records.
Formal Administration – required for most estates with real property beyond the muniment-of-title threshold or significant liquid assets. The Chancery Judge reviews the petition, the will (if any), and supporting documents before issuing Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration appointing the personal representative.
Step 2: filing for probate
File a petition with the Chancery Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The personal representative inventories assets and notifies creditors; Mississippi’s creditor claim period runs 90 days (Miss. Code Ann. § 91-7-145).
Claims and disputes are adjudicated by the Chancery Court if contested.
Once debts are settled and the creditor period closes, the estate can be distributed and closed.
What it costs
Costs are the Chancery Clerk’s per-county filing fee (built on the statewide base under Miss. Code § 25-7-9), plus recording fees and publication costs.
Mississippi has no state estate tax or inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could separately apply, and only to very large estates.
