Sikeston's Bootleg BBQ and the New Madrid Seismic Zone - from Sikeston's Lambert's Cafe (the Home of Throwed Rolls - since 1942 Lambert's has thrown dinner rolls to diners across the restaurant, a theatrical serving tradition that made it one of the most famous restaurants in the Midwest, drawing visitors from across the country) to Scott County's position directly atop the New Madrid Seismic Zone (the most seismically active region east of the Rocky Mountains - the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes were among the largest in recorded North American history, causing the Mississippi River to temporarily flow backward) and the Bootheel's cotton agricultural heritage.

Roads & Utilities

Roads: I-55 and I-57 intersect at Sikeston, the county’s largest city, making it one of only a few Missouri cities at the junction of two interstates; US-60 and US-61 also serve the city.
Notes: Scott County offices are centered in Benton, MO 63736. Sikeston, founded 1860 by John Sikes and platted along the proposed route of the Cairo & Fulton Railroad, sits at roughly the halfway point between St. Louis and Memphis, Tennessee, and is the principal city of the Sikeston Micropolitan Statistical Area (all of Scott County, total population ~41,100). The Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto may have passed through the Sikeston Ridge area in 1541; in 1789 the King of Spain ordered the establishment of “El Camino Real” (The King’s Highway), a historic overland route through the region, now largely followed by US-61.

About Scott County
Scott County is southeastern Missouri’s Bootheel community – home to one of the Midwest’s most beloved restaurant traditions and sitting atop one of America’s most significant earthquake fault systems.
Sikeston (population ~16,000) is the county’s largest city and regional commercial hub. Lambert’s Cafe – the Home of Throwed Rolls since 1942 – throws hot yeast rolls to diners across the dining room, a tradition that has made it one of Missouri’s most visited restaurants and a national media favorite.
The New Madrid Seismic Zone beneath Scott County produced the catastrophic 1811-12 earthquake sequence – the largest earthquakes in recorded eastern North American history – that temporarily reversed the flow of the Mississippi River and created Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Scott County Circuit Court, Probate Division 131 S. Winchester Street (mail: P.O. Box 587), Benton, MO 63736 (573) 545-3596
Scott County was founded December 28, 1821, named for U.S. Representative John Scott, in southeastern Missouri, seated in Benton (though Sikeston is the county’s largest city). The 1912 Scott County Courthouse, Beaux Arts in style, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Missouri probate is governed by Title XXXI of the Missouri Revised Statutes (Chapters 470-475), the Probate Code.
Small Estate Affidavit (RSMo § 473.097) – available when the entire estate, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $40,000. A 30-day waiting period after death applies, and only if no application for letters is pending. If the property listed is worth more than $15,000, the clerk must publish a notice to creditors in a newspaper of general circulation in the county. A bond may be required. Once the court issues a certified small estate certificate, the affiant presents it directly to whoever holds the property to collect and distribute assets – avoiding full probate. Typical timeline: about two months to close, versus six months to a year or more for full probate.
Formal Administration – required for larger or more complex estates. A petition for Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without one) is filed with the probate division. After review, the court appoints the personal representative and issues the letters. Missouri offers both supervised and independent administration. Missouri requires an attorney to represent the personal representative in both types of administration.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a petition with the Probate Division of the Circuit Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The court appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes a notice to creditors in a newspaper of general circulation in the county, and gives direct notice to known creditors. Creditors have 6 months from the date of first publication to file claims.
Within 30 days of appointment (unless the court extends the deadline), the personal representative files an inventory and appraisement of all estate assets.
After debts are paid and the creditor claim period expires, the personal representative distributes the remaining assets and files a final settlement with the court to close the estate.
What it costs
Missouri sets statutory minimum fees for attorneys and personal representatives based on a percentage of the estate’s value, though additional fees may be allowed for extraordinary services.
Missouri has no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
