Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Nevada resident for at least 30 days before the election (and county resident for 30 days, precinct resident for 10 days), at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, not currently serving a term of imprisonment for a felony conviction, and not declared mentally incompetent by a court
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: nvsos.gov/voters (Nevada Secretary of State voter registration portal) - requires Nevada driver's license or state ID number; deadline 3rd Tuesday before Election Day (approximately 21 days before most elections); 4th Tuesday before primary/general elections
  4. BY MAIL: Download Nevada voter registration form from nvsos.gov or complete Form ES-07; must be postmarked by the same deadline as online (3rd or 4th Tuesday before election)
  5. IN PERSON: County Clerk or Registrar of Voters office; Nevada DMV when conducting license transactions; many government offices - advance deadline same as online/mail
  6. SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: Nevada offers same-day voter registration and in-person voting during the early voting period and on Election Day at polling places; available through close of polls on Election Day
  7. AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION: Nevada implemented automatic voter registration through the DMV - when applying for or renewing a driver's license/state ID, eligible individuals are automatically registered unless they opt out

Nevada Notes

Important state-specific details

  • AUTOMATIC MAIL BALLOTS: Nevada sends mail ballots to ALL registered voters for all primary and general elections - no application needed; this is "permanent no-excuse vote by mail" for all registered voters.
  • SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: Nevada offers same-day registration during early voting AND on Election Day - very permissive.
  • AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION: Through Nevada DMV - eligible individuals automatically registered unless they opt out.
  • FELONY VOTING RIGHTS: IMMEDIATELY restored upon release from prison under AB431 (effective July 1, 2019) - regardless of felony category, regardless of parole or probation status; parole and probation do NOT prevent voting; simply register (or re-register) after release; no waiting period; no action required beyond re-registration.
  • Pre-registration available at age 17.
  • Party registration required to vote in partisan primaries; nonpartisan/independent voters receive nonpartisan ballot.
  • Polls open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM; anyone in line at closing must vote.
