How to do it
Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, New Mexico resident, at least 18 years old on Election Day (may pre-register at 17), not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction, and not declared mentally incompetent by a court
Choose your registration method:
ONLINE: sos.nm.gov or nmvote.org - can use current OR expired New Mexico state ID/driver's license to register online; quick and recommended
BY MAIL: Download or request a voter registration form from sos.nm.gov or your county Clerk; complete, sign, and mail to your county Clerk or the NM Secretary of State
IN PERSON: County Clerk's office; New Mexico MVD offices (automatic registration as of July 1, 2025); many government offices - advance deadline: 28 days before Election Day
AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION: As of July 1, 2025, all qualifying MVD customers who meet eligibility qualifications are automatically registered to vote
SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: New Mexico offers same-day voter registration and voting on Election Day at the county Clerk's office; bring qualifying ID

County-specific variations apply
Voter registration administered by County Clerks in each of NM's 33 counties. Bernalillo County (Albuquerque), Santa Fe County, and Doña Ana County (Las Cruces) have the most resources. Rural counties (Harding, De Baca, Catron, Guadalupe, etc.) have very limited election office resources. Contact your specific county Clerk for local early voting sites and hours.

AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION through NM MVD (effective July 1, 2025).
NO-EXCUSE ABSENTEE VOTING: any registered voter may vote by mail.
Early in-person absentee voting available 28 days before election at county Clerk's office.
FELONY VOTING RIGHTS: restored immediately upon release from incarceration - parole and probation do NOT restrict voting rights in New Mexico (NM Stat. § 1-4-27.1B); must re-register after release.
Previously convicted felons: can register and vote upon release with no restrictions if on parole or probation.
ID: New Mexico requires some form of identification for in-person voting; photo ID preferred; name/address alternatives accepted; contact your county Clerk for details.
