Key Assets: Essex County is home to Lake Placid, one of the most recognizable places in American sports history – the village genuinely hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980, along with the 1972 and 2023 Winter World University Games; the 1980 Games are forever remembered for the “Miracle on Ice,” when a team of American college students and amateurs defeated the heavily favored four-time defending champion Soviet Union men’s hockey team 4-3 on February 22, 1980, at the Olympic Center – the Americans went on to win gold two days later, and speed skater Eric Heiden won an unprecedented five individual gold medals at the same Games; Lake Placid’s Olympic legacy traces back to a 1929 pitch by Godfrey Dewey convincing the IOC that the area had the best winter sports facilities in the country, building on a ski jump and speed skating venue established by 1921; the neighboring town of North Elba is also genuinely the burial site of radical abolitionist John Brown, who purchased land there in the 1840s after being inspired by philanthropist Gerrit Smith’s distribution of land to formerly enslaved people; following Brown’s 1859 execution in Virginia for his raid on Harpers Ferry, his body was returned to Essex County, lying in state under guard at the Elizabethtown Courthouse before burial at what is preserved today as the John Brown Farm State Historic Site
Notes: Essex County’s genuine status as the two-time host of the Winter Olympics – including the legendary “Miracle on Ice” – combined with its role as abolitionist John Brown’s final resting place, makes it one of the most historically resonant counties found anywhere in this project.

About Essex County
Essex County is New York’s Adirondack High Peaks county – a vast wilderness community whose Olympic legacy, highest mountain, and colonial military heritage make it one of the most historically and recreationally significant counties in the state.
Lake Placid (village, population ~2,500) has hosted the Winter Olympics twice. The 1980 Games produced the “Miracle on Ice” – the US Olympic hockey team’s 4-3 defeat of the heavily favored Soviet Union on February 22, 1980, in what Sports Illustrated called the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. The Olympic venues remain active training and competition facilities.
Mount Marcy – New York’s highest point at 5,344 feet – is accessible via the Van Hoevenberg Trail from the Adirondack Loj. Theodore Roosevelt was hiking on Marcy when he received word of President McKinley’s death in 1901.
Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain preserves one of the most significant military sites of the French and Indian War and American Revolution.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Essex County Surrogate’s Court Essex County Courthouse, 7559 Court Street (mail: P.O. Box 217), Elizabethtown, NY 12932 (518) 873-3384 Essex County is in New York’s Adirondacks, seated in Elizabethtown.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
New York probate and estate administration is governed by the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act (SCPA) and handled by the Surrogate’s Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled. New York has 62 counties, each with its own Surrogate’s Court.
Voluntary Administration / Small Estate Affidavit (SCPA Article 13) – available when the decedent’s PERSONAL property (not real property) has a gross value of $50,000 or less, excluding certain property automatically set aside for a surviving spouse or children under 21 (EPTL 5-3.1). Owning real property does NOT disqualify an estate from this process – only the personal property counts toward the $50,000 cap. The filing fee is just $1.00.
Probate – required when there’s a valid will and the estate exceeds the small-estate threshold or involves real property.
Administration – required when the decedent died intestate (no will); the Surrogate’s Court appoints an administrator following the statutory priority order under SCPA 1001.
Step 2: filing for probate or administration
File the will (if any) with the Surrogate’s Court in the county where the decedent was domiciled, along with a probate or administration petition.
The court issues Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without a will) to the appointed fiduciary.
The fiduciary notifies creditors and beneficiaries and inventories the estate’s assets.
Debts, expenses, and any required New York State Estate Tax are paid.
The fiduciary distributes the remaining assets according to the will or New York’s intestacy law and files a final accounting to close the estate.
What it costs
Voluntary Administration filing fee: $1.00.
Full probate/administration filing fees vary and generally scale with estate value.
UNIQUE TO NEW YORK: New York imposes its own separate state ESTATE TAX. For 2026, the New York basic exclusion amount is $7,350,000 – estates at or below that owe no state estate tax. New York has an unusual “cliff”: if the estate’s value exceeds the exclusion by more than 5% (over $7,717,500 in 2026), the ENTIRE estate becomes taxable from the first dollar. No portability between spouses. Rates range from about 3.06% to 16%.
New York has no separate state inheritance tax.
