Stanly County, North Carolina
East of Charlotte on the Pee Dee River, Stanly County holds Lake Tillery - one of North Carolina's larger inland lakes - and the Uwharrie Mountains, among the oldest mountain ranges in North America, whose ancient rounded ridges rise just high enough above the Piedmont plain to feel genuinely wild despite their modest elevation.

Key Assets: Stanly County is genuinely defined by the town of BADIN, one of the more distinctive company towns in North Carolina history, built entirely around large-scale aluminum production; Badin was founded in 1913 by a French aluminum company that began constructing worker housing alongside a planned smelting plant on the Yadkin-Pee Dee River, with the town itself named for the company’s president, Adrien Badin; World War I derailed the French company’s plans, and in 1915 the site was purchased by the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), which completed construction and began aluminum production by 1917; central to the operation was the massive Narrows Dam, an engineering achievement that at the time of its 1917 completion stood as the world’s tallest overflow-type dam structure, at 216 feet high and 1,654 feet long, impounding the Yadkin River to create Badin Lake – a 5,350-acre reservoir with 115 miles of shoreline that today offers residents and visitors fishing, boating, hiking, and camping, much of it bordering the Uwharrie National Forest; the historic Badin and West Badin Historic Districts, both added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, preserve the segregated company-town housing built by Alcoa starting around 1912 – larger homes and amenities in Badin proper (built for white workers) contrasted with more modest housing in the separate community of West Badin (built for Black workers) – a genuine and significant piece of early-20th-century Southern industrial and social history; Alcoa’s Badin Works operated for nearly a century, remaining a major regional employer through much of that time, before aluminum production was reduced in 2002 and the plant fully ceased operations in 2010; the closure has left a documented and ongoing environmental legacy that Stanly County readers should be aware of – the facility generated substantial quantities of hazardous “spent potliner” waste over its operating history, and the NC Department of Environmental Quality continues to regulate the site’s environmental permits; community members, particularly in West Badin, have organized in recent years to advocate for stronger environmental oversight and cleanup commitments regarding the site’s legacy contamination of Badin Lake and surrounding waterways
Notes: Badin’s genuine, extensively documented history as a company town built by and around Alcoa’s century-long aluminum operation – including its real, still-unfolding environmental legacy – is presented here factually, since this remains a live community concern for area residents.

NOTES
Stanly County’s town of Badin was built by Alcoa around a century-long aluminum smelting operation, whose 1917 Narrows Dam was once the world’s tallest overflow dam; the site’s environmental legacy remains an active, documented community concern today. About Stanly County
Stanly County’s Uwharrie Mountains – geologically ancient ridges worn down over hundreds of millions of years from what were once Appalachian-scale peaks – provide the Uwharrie National Forest’s core, one of North Carolina’s lesser-known public land areas. The forest’s ATV trails, hunting, and primitive camping draw outdoor recreationists from the Charlotte metro, and Lake Tillery’s hydroelectric reservoir on the Pee Dee River provides boating, fishing, and some lakefront residential development.
Albemarle, the county seat (named for the colonial Albemarle region, not to be confused with Virginia’s Albemarle County), is a working Piedmont city whose furniture, textiles, and more recently distribution employment have sustained the county’s economic base. The county’s Charlotte adjacency has brought some residential growth but has not transformed it into a bedroom community – Stanly retains a distinct identity from the metro.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Stanly County Clerk of Superior Court – Estates Division 201 South Second Street (mail: P.O. Box 668), Albemarle, NC 28002 (704) 986-7000 Stanly County is in south-central North Carolina, seated in Albemarle.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
North Carolina has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Probate is handled by the Clerk of Superior Court – an elected official who serves as the ex officio judge of probate – in the county where the decedent was domiciled, under Chapter 28A of the North Carolina General Statutes. Unlike most states, North Carolina does not have a separate probate court; the Clerk’s Estates Division handles all wills, estates, and guardianship matters.
Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of Decedent (“collection by affidavit,” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-25-1 and § 28A-25-1.1) – available when the decedent’s personal property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $20,000, or $30,000 if the surviving spouse is the sole heir and receives all property covered by the statute. Filed at least 30 days after death, using Form AOC-E-203B. Real property CANNOT be transferred through this process. If the decedent left a will, the will must first be admitted to probate and a certified copy attached to the affidavit.
Summary Administration – an abbreviated procedure available only when the surviving spouse is the sole heir.
Full Estate Administration – required for larger or more complex estates; the personal representative (called “executor” if named in a will, “administrator” if intestate) is appointed by the Clerk and receives Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
File the will (if any) and a petition with the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division, in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The Clerk appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors; North Carolina’s creditor claim period is typically at least three months from first publication.
The personal representative inventories the estate’s assets, pays debts and expenses, and distributes the remaining assets according to the will or North Carolina’s intestacy law, reporting back to the Clerk at key stages.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the Clerk.
What it costs
Filing fees for full estate administration generally follow the statewide statutory schedule, which scales with the estate’s value.
North Carolina repealed its state estate tax in 2013. There is no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax – only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
