Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Beaver County’s seat, Beaver, is genuinely and officially the “Cowchip Throwing Capital of the World,” home to the annual World Cow Chip Throwing Championship held every August since the sport’s first sanctioned contest in 1970; the tradition traces back to the earliest days of settlement in this treeless stretch of the Oklahoma Panhandle, when pioneers, lacking wood for fuel, resourcefully burned dried cow chips to heat their homes and cook their meals – with, according to local legend, someone eventually turning the practical necessity into recreation by tossing one into a wagon just to see how far it would go; competitors today search through piles of dried cow dung for a chip at least six inches across, then compete for distance, with the current world record standing at 185 feet; the town, whose very motto reflects its frontier “No Man’s Land” heritage – the Oklahoma Panhandle was governed by no formal territory or state authority for years before becoming part of Oklahoma at statehood – proudly claims King Cow Chip as its official trademarked mascot, a cartoon character who leads the parade each year alongside his “royal entourage”; the week-long celebration, held in conjunction with the Beaver County Fair, also features a chili cook-off, talent show, antique tractor pull, rodeo, carnival, and craft show, drawing visitors from across the Midwest and South to this town of roughly 1,300 residents; Beaver began in 1879 as a fur-trading post along the Beaver River, later becoming a support hub for the cattle ranchers who settled the surrounding panhandle
Notes: Beaver’s genuine, officially trademarked “Cowchip Throwing Capital of the World” title – rooted in real frontier necessity turned beloved local tradition since 1970 – is one of the most gleefully unusual small-town claims to fame found anywhere in this project.

About Beaver County County
Beaver County is the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle’s No Man’s Land and Beaver Dunes county – the lawless strip that belonged to no government for 40 years and the sand dunes rising from the wheat plains along the Beaver River define a Panhandle community where Beaver serves the county’s farming and ranching families.
Beaver (the county seat, population ~1,400) is Beaver County’s governmental hub on US 270, an Oklahoma Panhandle community whose No Man’s Land heritage, Beaver Dunes State Park, and wheat and cattle economy anchor its identity.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Beaver County District Court 111 West 2nd Street, Beaver, OK 73932 (580) 625-3191 Beaver County is in the Oklahoma Panhandle, seated in Beaver.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Beaver County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
