South Carolina County
McCormick County, South Carolina
Lake Thurmond's Savannah River reservoir and the gold rush heritage - from Lake Thurmond (the 70,000-acre Savannah River reservoir - formerly known as Clarks Hill Lake - one of the largest lakes in the Southeast, straddling the South Carolina-Georgia border with over 1,200 miles of shoreline and exceptional bass and crappie fishing) to McCormick County's gold rush heritage (the discovery of gold near McCormick in the 1850s briefly created a gold rush that brought prospectors to the South Carolina Piedmont - the Dorn Gold Mine was one of the most significant gold mines in the antebellum South, and remnants of the mining era are preserved in the area).

Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: McCormick County – South Carolina’s smallest and second-youngest county, formed in 1916 from parts of Greenwood, Abbeville, and Edgefield Counties – is genuinely named for CYRUS HALL McCORMICK, the famed inventor of the mechanical reaper and founder of what became International Harvester; the story traces back to 1852, when prospector William Burkhalter Dorn struck gold at Peak Hill after nearly 15 years of searching, founding the settlement known as “Dorn’s Gold Mines,” which by some accounts yielded between $900,000 and $2 million in gold over roughly a decade using enslaved labor; the mine’s output collapsed after the Civil War with the end of slavery, and in 1869-1871 Cyrus McCormick purchased the mines for $20,000, spending much of the rest of his life trying (largely unsuccessfully) to make the operation profitable – but he did donate land that gave orderly shape to the growing town, which was named in his honor when incorporated in 1882 and became the county seat when McCormick County was formally organized in 1916; the historic Dorn Gold Mine site is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and remnants of old mining pits and tunnels remain scattered around town, celebrated locally through the county’s Gold Rush festival tradition; the mines also produced manganese during both World Wars before finally closing in the 1930s
Notes: McCormick County’s genuine namesake connection to reaper inventor Cyrus McCormick – and the dramatic gold-mining history that preceded it – is a distinctive piece of South Carolina industrial and agricultural history.

ANIMAL SERVICES
Facility: Humane Society of McCormick County – McCormick, SC | Email: [email protected]
Services: A private, all-volunteer, no-kill 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in September 2000 that serves as the ONLY animal welfare resource in the county – McCormick County does not fund or operate any county or city animal shelter, and the county has no resident veterinarians; serves Clarks Hill, McCormick, Modoc, Mount Carmel, Parksville, Plum Branch, and Willington; funded entirely by donations, grants, and fundraising; runs a #DoTheMath low-cost spay/neuter program and a free TNR (trap-neuter/spay-return) program for community cats
Notes: A notable community partnership: dogs from the Humane Society have participated in the McCormick County Sheriff’s Office Trustee Program at the county Detention Center, where jail trustees provide hands-on training to shelter dogs alongside HSMC volunteers before adoption. Because there is NO county or city-run shelter, this Humane Society is genuinely “all McCormick County has” for stray and homeless animal support – worth flagging clearly for readers.

NOTES
McCormick County is genuinely named for reaper inventor Cyrus McCormick, who purchased the area’s historic gold mine in 1871 – the county has no government-run animal shelter, relying entirely on the volunteer-run Humane Society of McCormick County. All contact information above was sourced from official county, city, library, and shelter pages as of this writing; phone numbers and hours should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
McCormick County Probate Court 133 South Mine Street, #101/102, McCormick, SC 29835 (864) 852-2630
McCormick County is in western South Carolina along the Georgia border, seated in McCormick – one of the state’s least populous counties.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
South Carolina HAS adopted a version of the Uniform Probate Code, giving it more standardized and generally more streamlined procedures than states with older, common-law-based systems. Probate is handled by a dedicated Probate Court in each of South Carolina’s 46 counties – a separate court of limited jurisdiction, led by an elected Probate Judge (four-year term). The case is filed in the county where the decedent lived.
Small Estate Affidavit / Collection by Affidavit (S.C. Code Ann. § 62-3-1201) – available when the gross value of the entire probate estate, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $45,000 (raised from $25,000 for deaths after May 2025). At least 30 days must have passed since death, and no petition for appointment of a personal representative can be pending anywhere. The successor files a Form 420PC “Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property,” which the probate judge approves and countersigns.
Summary Administration (§ 62-3-1203) – a simplified probate procedure available when the value of the estate passing by will (less liens and encumbrances) is under the statutory threshold, or when the surviving spouse is the sole heir or beneficiary.
Informal Probate – the standard path for the majority of estates. No notices or hearings are required unless demanded by an interested party.
Formal Proceedings – reserved for contested matters: objections to a personal representative’s appointment, will contests, a lost or destroyed will, or declaratory judgments on intestacy.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files a petition with the McCormick County Probate Court where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with it.
For informal probate, the Probate Judge (or a designated staff member) reviews the application administratively; formal proceedings require notice and a hearing.
The court issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, giving the personal representative authority to act.
The personal representative files an inventory and appraisement within 90 days of qualification, and provides periodic accountings as the court requires.
Creditors are notified; claims not timely presented are barred.
The estate closes with a final settlement – a verified report and proposed distribution served on interested parties and approved by the Probate Court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary; check with McCormick County directly for current fees.
A personal representative’s bond, when required, must equal one and one-half times the value of the estate’s personal property, though bond can often be waived under certain conditions.
South Carolina does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax applies, and only to very large estates.
