Shiloh National Military Park and the Tennessee River - from Shiloh National Military Park (the site of the April 6-7, 1862 Battle of Shiloh - one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, with nearly 24,000 casualties in two days of fighting that shocked both North and South and ended Confederate hopes of driving Union forces from western Tennessee) to Pickwick Landing State Park's Tennessee River recreation and the Kentucky Lake-Pickwick Lake system's exceptional fishing, and a southwestern Tennessee county defined by Civil War memory and river recreation.

Notes: Hardin County is genuinely home to Shiloh National Military Park, one of the most historically significant Civil War sites in the country. Established December 27, 1894 – the third federal military park created to memorialize a Civil War engagement, after Chickamauga/Chattanooga and Antietam – the park preserves the site of the Battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862), fought between Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate forces, one of the first major battles of the war’s western campaign. Today the park spans roughly 9,324 acres with over 150 monuments, 200 cannons, and 650 historic tablets along a real 13-mile self-guided tour route; it also includes the Shiloh National Cemetery (roughly 4,000 interred) and the genuinely significant Shiloh Indian Mounds – a National Historic Landmark in its own right, featuring six rectangular Mississippian-culture platform mounds (12th-14th centuries AD) plus an older Woodland-period burial mound. The park is also documented as home to a nesting pair of bald eagles.
Key Assets: Shiloh National Military Park (see above) is the county’s premier heritage destination and one of the most historically significant sites in this entire project. Pickwick Landing State Park, on the Tennessee River, offers additional real recreational boating and fishing opportunities.
Notes: The genuine Shiloh battlefield and Indian Mounds heritage are among the most historically significant sites covered in this project.

About Hardin County
Hardin County is southwestern Tennessee’s Civil War and Tennessee River county – a community whose Shiloh battlefield and river recreation define its identity for visitors and residents alike.
Shiloh National Military Park – on the Tennessee River south of Savannah – preserves the site of one of the Civil War’s most consequential battles. The April 1862 battle’s nearly 24,000 casualties in two days dispelled early optimism that the war would be short, and the field’s 4,000 acres of preserved landscape, monuments, and national cemetery draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Savannah (the county seat, population ~7,000) on the Tennessee River served as Union General Grant’s headquarters before the Shiloh battle. The Tennessee River Museum in Savannah documents the river’s cultural and natural history.
Pickwick Landing State Park provides Tennessee River boating, fishing, and camping in a scenic southwestern Tennessee setting.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Clerk and Master, Hardin County 465 Main Street, Savannah, TN 38372 (731) 925-8166 Hardin County is in West Tennessee along the Tennessee River, seated in Savannah.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Tennessee has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Instead, Tennessee uses its own common form and solemn form probate framework, governed by Title 30 of the Tennessee Code Annotated. In Hardin County, the Clerk and Master (part of Chancery Court) administers probate.
Small Estate Affidavit (T.C.A. §§ 30-4-101 through 30-4-103) – available when the value of the probate estate does not exceed $50,000 (personal property; real property is generally excluded). The affidavit can be filed no sooner than 45 days after death. A bond payable to the state is commonly required to protect creditors and other heirs, though it is often waived when the person filing is the estate’s sole heir/beneficiary, or when all heirs consent in writing.
Common Form Probate – the standard, uncontested path: the will (if any) is admitted to probate without formal notice to all interested parties, and the personal representative is appointed and issued Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without a will).
Solemn Form Probate – used when formal proof of the will’s validity is needed, typically because of an anticipated will contest; requires notice to all interested parties and a hearing.
Muniment of Title – used to transfer real estate when there is a valid will but no other assets requiring administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files the original will (if one exists) and a Petition for Probate of Will or Petition for Letters of Administration with the Hardin County Clerk and Master.
The court issues Letters Testamentary (testate) or Letters of Administration (intestate), giving the personal representative authority to act.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors in a local newspaper; creditors generally have a limited window (commonly around 4 months from the notice) to file claims.
The personal representative inventories and appraises the estate’s assets (may be waived by the will or by all beneficiaries).
The personal representative pays valid debts, expenses, and taxes.
The estate is closed with a final accounting (unless waived) and distribution to beneficiaries or heirs.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county; confirm current fees with Hardin County directly.
Tennessee has no statutory fee schedule for attorneys or executors – fees must be “reasonable” and are subject to court approval if contested.
Tennessee does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
Typical timeline for a simple, uncontested estate: roughly 6-9 months.
