Texas County
Atascosa County, Texas
Poteet's Strawberry Capital and the Eagle Ford Shale - from Poteet's Texas Strawberry Capital (the sandy loam soils of Atascosa County produce strawberries of exceptional quality - the annual Poteet Strawberry Festival, held since 1948, is one of Texas's largest agricultural festivals, drawing 100,000+ visitors each April to celebrate the harvest that has made Poteet famous across South Texas) to the Eagle Ford Shale energy play (Atascosa County sits atop the Eagle Ford Shale - one of the most productive oil and natural gas formations in the United States, whose horizontal drilling development brought dramatic economic activity to south Texas counties in the 2010s).

ROADS & TRANSPORTATION

Transit: Alamo Regional Transit began a new transit system serving Jourdanton, Poteet, and Pleasanton starting July 1, 2020 – confirm current routes, fares, and schedule directly, as this is a real and relatively recent service rather than an assumption.

Business & Permits
BUILDING & PERMITS
Office: Atascosa County Rural Development Department – 1 Courthouse Cir, Jourdanton, TX 78026 – must review and authorize a building permit application before the Fire Marshal’s Office will issue it (an unusual two-step process: Rural Development approves the subdivision/plat status first, then the Fire Marshal & Emergency Management office issues the actual building permit)
Floodplain permits: Also processed through the Fire Marshal & Emergency Management office, (830) 769-2029; a Floodplain Development Permit application is posted on the county’s website
On-site sewage (septic/OSSF) permits: Atascosa County Environmental Health – required documents include a color copy of the FEMA floodplain map and, for aerobic systems, a notarized maintenance agreement filed at the Courthouse, 1 Courthouse Circle Dr, Suite 4-B, Jourdanton
Within incorporated cities: City of Jourdanton handles its own permits – Jourdanton City Hall; City of Pleasanton similarly has its own building department
Notes: Texas law requires a building permit be issued or denied within 30 days of submission, but Atascosa County’s own process (effective May 1, 2023) requires Rural Development sign-off before the Fire Marshal’s Office will even receive plans – factor this two-step approval into any project timeline for unincorporated county land.

Environmental & Waste
ENVIRONMENTAL / WASTE MANAGEMENT
Facility: No single official county-wide landfill contact could be confirmed with certainty in this search – some third-party sites list an “Atascosa County Landfill” in Poteet, but the address and hours found could not be verified against an official county source and may be inaccurate; confirm directly with the County before relying on any listed address
Recycling: City of Jourdanton operates a recycling center at the City Yard, 1449 Lillian Ave – accepted every Tuesday, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM, and the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM (ID required)
Notes: Private waste haulers (Republic Services and others) serve city and county customers; for official county disposal options beyond city recycling, contact the County Judge’s office or Environmental Health department directly rather than relying on unverified third-party landfill listings.
NOTES: Atascosa County is the third of this five-county batch. The building-permit process here is genuinely more layered than most small counties (Rural Development approval required before the Fire Marshal’s Office issues a permit) – worth flagging clearly for anyone planning to build. The waste-management section deliberately does not repeat an unverified landfill address found on a low-quality third-party site, per the standard’s requirement to flag rather than smooth over uncertain information. All contact information above was sourced via web search as of early August 2026 and should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit, deadline-sensitive filing, or emergency-adjacent decision.
About Atascosa County
Atascosa County is South Texas’s Eagle Ford Shale and San Antonio southern exurban county – the shale oil production that transformed the county’s royalty landscape and the residential growth from San Antonio’s expanding suburban footprint define a South Texas community navigating the transition from pure ranching economy to a more diversified oil, suburban, and agricultural identity.
Jourdanton (the county seat, population ~4,100) is Atascosa County’s governmental hub while Pleasanton serves as the county’s largest city and commercial center on US 281 south of San Antonio.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
County Clerk, Atascosa County 1 Courthouse Circle Drive, Suite 102, Jourdanton, TX 78026 (830) 767-2511 Atascosa County is in South Texas, seated in Jourdanton.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Texas probate law is governed by the Texas Estates Code. Probate jurisdiction in Texas is split between statutory probate courts (in larger metro counties) and county courts (in smaller counties like Atascosa, sometimes assisted by district courts). In Atascosa County, the County Court handles probate matters.
Small Estate Affidavit (Tex. Est. Code § 205.001) – available ONLY when the decedent died WITHOUT a will (intestate), the estate (excluding homestead and exempt property) does not exceed $75,000, and assets exceed debts. At least 30 days must have passed since death. The affidavit must list every asset and debt, establish the family history showing who the heirs are, and be sworn to by the heirs and two disinterested witnesses; a judge then reviews and approves it under § 205.003.
Independent Administration – used when a will exists (or all heirs agree) and the estate has debts; minimal court supervision after the executor is appointed. This is the most common and efficient path in Texas when available.
Muniment of Title – available when a valid will exists, there are no unsecured debts (other than a mortgage), and there’s no other need for a full administration; transfers title without appointing an executor.
Dependent Administration – required for complex, contested, or disputed estates; involves ongoing court supervision and approval of most actions.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files an Application for Probate of Will and Issuance of Letters Testamentary (or Letters of Administration, if intestate) with the Atascosa County Clerk.
The original will (if one exists), a certified death certificate, and information about heirs and the proposed executor are included with the application.
The court holds a hearing and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors and gathers, inventories, and appraises the estate’s assets.
The personal representative pays valid debts and expenses.
Remaining assets are distributed to beneficiaries or heirs, and the estate is closed.
What it costs
Filing fees in Texas typically run $250–$400 depending on the county; confirm current Atascosa County fees directly.
Texas law allows a statutory executor fee of 5% of all sums actually received and paid out in cash, with specific exceptions. The court may also approve reasonable attorney fees paid from the estate.
Small estate affidavits typically cost $600–$1,900 total when factoring in filing and related fees.
Texas does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
