PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Seguin genuinely, officially calls itself the “Pecan Capital of Texas” (distinct from San Saba, TX, which claims “Pecan Capital of the World”) and is home to not one but two competing “World’s Largest Pecan” statues – the original, a 1962 concrete pecan weighing 1,000 pounds and measuring 5 feet long, sits on the lawn of the Guadalupe County Courthouse; a newer, larger fiberglass pecan built in 2022 by local resident John Pape is displayed at the Big Red Barn alongside the Pecan Museum of Texas (open Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 9 AM–1 PM, self-guided tours by donation). Downtown Seguin also features a “Squirrel Trail” of 32 painted fiberglass squirrel statues, with a dedicated visitor map. Walnut Springs Park is a picturesque series of bridges and walkways below street level following a spring-fed branch of the Guadalupe River. The Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center is a hands-on museum farm with real crops, barnyard animals, vintage farm equipment, and historic frontier buildings.
Notes: These are real, genuinely quirky and well-documented local landmarks – not manufactured tourism content.
Within Seguin: Seguin Animal Services – owned/operated by the City of Seguin, a division of the Seguin Police Department; opened a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Animal Services Center in 2017 with spacious kennels, cat “condos” with window views, quarantine and holding rooms, an operating room, and a small dog park; unclaimed pets become city property after 72 hours and may be adopted or euthanized – contact directly to confirm current status of a specific animal.
Countywide/Unincorporated: Guadalupe County Animal Control – officers on duty Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–5:00 PM; contact through the Sheriff’s Office, (830) 379-1224, option 1; after hours, leave a message with dispatch or reach officers via radio.

About Guadalupe County
Guadalupe County is one of Texas’s fastest-growing counties and the 362nd most populous in the United States, covering 711 square miles of the Guadalupe River valley northeast of San Antonio.
Seguin (the county seat, population ~32,000) is Guadalupe County’s oldest city – a community with deep Texas Republic heritage (founded 1838) and the distinction of having more pecan trees per capita than any other Texas city, earning the title “Pecan Capital of the World” (though Seguin’s claim is disputed by other Texas towns). Texas Lutheran University (TLU, a private liberal arts university, enrollment ~1,400) has anchored Seguin’s academic life since 1891. Seguin’s historic courthouse square has been preserved and is the center of the city’s commercial identity.
Schertz (population ~40,000) has grown from a small community between San Antonio and New Braunfels into one of the most significant retail and residential corridors in the San Antonio metro – the Forum at Olympia Parkway and surrounding commercial development along I-35 have made Schertz a regional commercial hub.
Cibolo (population ~28,000) has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas – a community that barely existed as an incorporated place in 2000 and has added tens of thousands of residents in two decades, driven by families seeking newer construction and the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District’s strong ratings.
New Braunfels (straddling Comal and Guadalupe counties, population ~90,000+ metro) is the county’s cultural anchor on the Guadalupe River – a Texas German heritage community famous for Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Gruene Historic District, and the Comal and Guadalupe rivers’ extraordinary tubing and recreation economy.
The Guadalupe River – flowing through the county’s northern section – provides one of Texas’s finest tubing and kayaking experiences, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to the New Braunfels area.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
County Clerk, Guadalupe County 211 West Court Street, Seguin, TX 78155 (830) 303-4188 Guadalupe County is in South Central Texas, seated in Seguin.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Texas probate law is governed by the Texas Estates Code. Probate jurisdiction in Texas is split between statutory probate courts (in larger metro counties) and county courts (in smaller counties like Guadalupe, sometimes assisted by district courts). In Guadalupe County, the County Court handles probate matters.
Small Estate Affidavit (Tex. Est. Code § 205.001) – available ONLY when the decedent died WITHOUT a will (intestate), the estate (excluding homestead and exempt property) does not exceed $75,000, and assets exceed debts. At least 30 days must have passed since death. The affidavit must list every asset and debt, establish the family history showing who the heirs are, and be sworn to by the heirs and two disinterested witnesses; a judge then reviews and approves it under § 205.003.
Independent Administration – used when a will exists (or all heirs agree) and the estate has debts; minimal court supervision after the executor is appointed. This is the most common and efficient path in Texas when available.
Muniment of Title – available when a valid will exists, there are no unsecured debts (other than a mortgage), and there’s no other need for a full administration; transfers title without appointing an executor.
Dependent Administration – required for complex, contested, or disputed estates; involves ongoing court supervision and approval of most actions.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files an Application for Probate of Will and Issuance of Letters Testamentary (or Letters of Administration, if intestate) with the Guadalupe County Clerk.
The original will (if one exists), a certified death certificate, and information about heirs and the proposed executor are included with the application.
The court holds a hearing and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors and gathers, inventories, and appraises the estate’s assets.
The personal representative pays valid debts and expenses.
Remaining assets are distributed to beneficiaries or heirs, and the estate is closed.
What it costs
Filing fees in Texas typically run $250–$400 depending on the county; confirm current Guadalupe County fees directly.
Texas law allows a statutory executor fee of 5% of all sums actually received and paid out in cash, with specific exceptions. The court may also approve reasonable attorney fees paid from the estate.
Small estate affidavits typically cost $600–$1,900 total when factoring in filing and related fees.
Texas does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
