Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Randall County is genuinely home to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, real and widely recognized as the “Grand Canyon of Texas” and the second-largest canyon system in the United States – roughly 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and 800 feet deep, carved by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River over roughly a million years, with canyon-wall strata spanning more than 240 million years of geological history. The park (28,000+ acres spanning Randall and Armstrong counties) opened July 4, 1934, largely built by Civilian Conservation Corps companies from 1933-1937 – including veteran-staffed companies and African American CCC companies – who constructed the park’s iconic Park Road 5, visitor center, cabins, and shelters; it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976. The canyon holds real, significant Old West and Native American history: it was the site of the September 28, 1874 Battle of Palo Duro Canyon, the decisive engagement of the Red River War, where Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie’s forces captured and slaughtered roughly 1,200 Comanche and Kiowa horses, effectively ending Native resistance on the Southern Plains. The park hosts “TEXAS Outdoor Musical,” a real long-running summer amphitheater production dramatizing state history. West Texas A&M University and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum – genuinely the largest history museum in Texas – are also based in Canyon.
Notes: This is real, extensively documented and geologically/historically significant Texas Panhandle content – genuinely one of the most impressive natural landmarks covered anywhere in this project.

About Randall County
Randall County is a Texas Panhandle county and the 451st most populous in the United States, covering 914 square miles of the high plains Llano Estacado south of Amarillo.
Canyon (the county seat, population ~15,000) is home to West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) (enrollment ~9,000) – the primary higher education institution for the Texas Panhandle. Canyon’s Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum – the largest history museum in Texas – houses extraordinary collections of Panhandle and West Texas natural and cultural history, including one of the finest collections of Plains Indian artifacts and Western art in the country.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park – the “Grand Canyon of Texas” – lies just southeast of Canyon. At 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and 800 feet deep, Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The canyon’s dramatic red and orange rock formations and the winding Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River provide extraordinary scenic and recreational resources. The TEXAS Outdoor Musical – performed in the canyon’s Pioneer Amphitheater each summer – is one of Texas’s most beloved outdoor theatrical traditions.
Amarillo straddles the Potter-Randall county line – the city’s most affluent southwest quadrant lies within Randall County, including neighborhoods with the highest property values in the Panhandle. The Puckett-Mooney area and related southwestern residential communities in Randall County represent the city’s premier addresses.
Randall County’s agricultural heritage is significant – the high plains around Canyon produce wheat, sorghum, and cotton, and the county’s feedlot industry contributes to the Texas Panhandle’s position as one of the world’s most significant beef production regions.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
County Clerk, Randall County 2309 Russell Long Boulevard, Suite 101, Canyon, TX 79015 (806) 468-5505 Randall County is in the Texas Panhandle, part of the Amarillo metropolitan area, seated in Canyon.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Texas probate law is governed by the Texas Estates Code. Probate jurisdiction in Texas is split between statutory probate courts (in larger metro counties) and county courts (in smaller counties, sometimes assisted by district courts). In Randall County, probate matters are heard in County Court or a County Court at Law.
Small Estate Affidavit (Tex. Est. Code § 205.001) – available ONLY when the decedent died WITHOUT a will (intestate), the estate (excluding homestead and exempt property) does not exceed $75,000, and assets exceed debts. At least 30 days must have passed since death. The affidavit must list every asset and debt, establish the family history showing who the heirs are, and be sworn to by the heirs and two disinterested witnesses; a judge then reviews and approves it under § 205.003.
Independent Administration – used when a will exists (or all heirs agree) and the estate has debts; minimal court supervision after the executor is appointed. This is the most common and efficient path in Texas when available.
Muniment of Title – available when a valid will exists, there are no unsecured debts (other than a mortgage), and there’s no other need for a full administration; transfers title without appointing an executor.
Dependent Administration – required for complex, contested, or disputed estates; involves ongoing court supervision and approval of most actions.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files an Application for Probate of Will and Issuance of Letters Testamentary (or Letters of Administration, if intestate) with the Randall County Clerk.
The original will (if one exists), a certified death certificate, and information about heirs and the proposed executor are included with the application.
The court holds a hearing and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors and gathers, inventories, and appraises the estate’s assets.
The personal representative pays valid debts and expenses.
Remaining assets are distributed to beneficiaries or heirs, and the estate is closed.
What it costs
Filing fees in Texas typically run $250–$400 depending on the county; confirm current Randall County fees directly.
Texas law allows a statutory executor fee of 5% of all sums actually received and paid out in cash, with specific exceptions. The court may also approve reasonable attorney fees paid from the estate.
Small estate affidavits typically cost $600–$1,900 total when factoring in filing and related fees.
Texas does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
