How do I register to vote or check my registration?

Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, Utah resident for at least 30 days before Election Day, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day (17-year-olds may pre-register; may vote in primary if will be 18 before the general election), NOT currently incarcerated in jail or prison for a felony conviction, not convicted of treason or election fraud without civil rights restoration, and not found mentally incompetent by a court
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. ONLINE: vote.utah.gov - Utah's online voter registration portal; requires Utah driver's license or state ID number; deadline: 11 days before Election Day at 5 PM
  4. BY MAIL: Download Utah voter registration form from vote.utah.gov; complete, sign; must be RECEIVED by county Clerk/Auditor by 11 days before Election Day at 5 PM (not just postmarked)
  5. IN PERSON: County Clerk/Auditor's office; Utah Driver License Division (motor voter); many state agencies; deadline: 11 days before Election Day
  6. SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: Utah allows registration AND voting on the SAME DAY at any Vote Center during:
  7. Early voting period (begins approximately 14 days before election through day before)
  8. Election Day itself (at Vote Center)
  9. Must provide TWO forms of ID: one photo ID + one proof of residence; OR driver's license with current address
  10. Submit registration by 11 days before Election Day (advance); OR register and vote same day at Vote Center
  11. Receive confirmation; your ballot will be automatically mailed to you before the next election

Each of Utah's 29 counties administers its own elections through the County Clerk/Auditor. Salt Lake County, Utah County, Davis County, Weber County, Washington County (St. George), and Cache County have the most resources. Vote Center locations vary by county; contact your county for local Vote Center locations.

Important state-specific details

  • VOTE-BY-MAIL: Utah has had universal vote-by-mail since 2012; all registered voters receive ballots automatically; no excuse needed; very convenient.
  • SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: Available with 2 IDs (photo + residence) or current driver's license at Vote Center during early voting and on Election Day.
  • Advance registration deadline: 11 days (shorter than most states); same-day option available.
  • FELONY VOTING RIGHTS: Restored AUTOMATICALLY upon release from prison, parole, or probation; only currently incarcerated individuals cannot vote; rights restored immediately upon release; simply re-register.
  • PHOTO ID required when voting in person (Vote Center or Election Day); may show photo ID + another ID with name and address; or photo ID alone if it shows current address.
  • MAIL BALLOT CHANGE (2029): HB300 will require voters to opt IN to receive mail ballots after 2029; until then, mail ballots automatic.
  • Polls/Vote Centers open 7 AM - 8 PM on Election Day.
