Virginia County
Brunswick County, Virginia
Brunswick stew birthplace and Meherrin River Piedmont - from Brunswick County's claim as the birthplace of Brunswick stew (the hearty Southern stew of meat, vegetables, and tomatoes is claimed by both Brunswick County, Virginia and Brunswick County, Georgia - Virginia partisans point to an 1828 camp stew made by a local hunter as the dish's origin, and a historic iron pot in Lawrenceville is displayed as evidence of the claim) to Brunswick County's Meherrin River Piedmont landscape (the county's rolling terrain drained by the Meherrin River supports tobacco, peanuts, and timber across one of Virginia's more rural and historically agricultural southern Piedmont counties near the North Carolina border).

Facility: Brunswick County Animal Shelter – operated by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office (took over animal control operations in January 2023) | (434) 848-0912 | [email protected]
After-hours/incident reporting (bite, missing/found animal, neglect): Shelter line (434) 848-0912 during business hours, or leave a message with the Sheriff’s Department at (434) 848-3133 outside those hours; call 911 for an active emergency
Services: 20 kennels (expanded from 12 under Sheriff’s Office management); dog licensing available through the Commissioner/Treasurer’s Office with proof of current rabies vaccination ($10 individual, $50 kennel, purchase window January 1–31 to avoid penalty)
Notes: The Brunswick Animal Shelter does NOT accept or house cats – it is not a state-approved facility for cats, though cats 4+ months old are still legally required to be vaccinated against rabies. The shelter also does not board animals and does not lend humane traps to residents – if you need to catch a stray on your property, contact an Animal Control Officer directly rather than looking for a trap to borrow. In 2023 the shelter logged roughly 2,020 calls for service (about 40/week) with just two full-time Animal Control Officers, according to county budget records – worth knowing that response times may reflect a genuinely stretched-thin department.

Notes: Contact Brunswick County Administration directly for current refuse collection, transfer station, and recycling program details, as specifics were not independently confirmed for this entry
NOTES
Brunswick County’s animal shelter has one detail every cat owner in the county should know upfront: it is not equipped or approved to take in cats at all, only dogs – a distinction that matters if you’re trying to report a stray or surrender an animal. The county also shares Lake Gaston’s cross-border recreational geography with North Carolina, and the Sheriff’s Office has run county animal control directly since January 2023. All contact information above was sourced from official county pages as of this writing; phone numbers and hours should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit.
About Brunswick County
Brunswick County is southern Virginia’s Brunswick stew birthplace and Meherrin River agricultural county – the historic stew claim gives the county a culinary identity while the rolling Piedmont landscape of tobacco, peanuts, and timber maintains the rural Southern agricultural character of one of Virginia’s older Southside counties near the North Carolina border.
Lawrenceville (the county seat, population ~1,200) is Brunswick County’s governmental and commercial hub, a small Southside Virginia town providing county services and regional connections for surrounding agricultural communities.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Brunswick Circuit Court 216 North Main Street, Lawrenceville, VA 23868 (434) 848-2215
Brunswick County is in Southern Virginia along the North Carolina border, county seat Lawrenceville. Virginia has NO separate probate court – probate (“qualification”) is handled entirely by the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Virginia calls the probate process “qualification” rather than “appointment,” and it happens administratively at the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, not before a judge, unless a dispute arises.
Small Estate Affidavit (Va. Code § 64.2-601, the “Virginia Small Estate Act”) – available when the decedent’s entire personal probate estate (excluding real estate) does not exceed $75,000, at least 60 days have passed since death, and no personal representative has been appointed or has a pending application in any jurisdiction. If a will exists, it must first be admitted to probate (recorded with the Clerk) even though no executor is appointed. As of July 1, 2026, the affidavit must be filed on the statewide form (CC-1685).
Single Small Asset Release (Va. Code § 64.2-602) – any person or institution holding a single asset of $35,000 or less may release it directly to a successor once 60 days have passed since death and no personal representative has qualified, without any affidavit required at all.
Real Estate Affidavit (Form CC-1612) – if the decedent owned only real estate, this can be recorded directly in land records without full probate. Real estate generally cannot be transferred through the small estate affidavit process.
Full Qualification / Administration – the standard path for larger or more complex estates. The personal representative appears before the Clerk, takes an oath, files the will and death certificate, and typically posts a surety bond. The estate is then supervised by a Commissioner of Accounts throughout administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
The person seeking to qualify as executor or administrator brings the original will (if any) and a certified death certificate to the Brunswick Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
The Clerk reviews the will’s validity and admits it to probate.
The personal representative takes an oath and qualifies, posting a bond if required; the Clerk issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The Commissioner of Accounts oversees the estate going forward.
The personal representative notifies creditors, pays valid debts, and manages estate assets.
Remaining assets are distributed to beneficiaries or heirs, and the estate is closed once final accounting is approved.
What it costs
Virginia imposes a PROBATE TAX on most wills admitted to probate and grants of administration: $1 state tax + $0.33 local tax for every $1,000 of estate value. No tax is imposed on estates valued at $15,000 or less.
Filing fees for qualification vary by estate size; confirm current Brunswick County fees directly.
Virginia does NOT impose a state estate tax or inheritance tax – repealed for deaths on or after July 1, 2007. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
