Newport News City, Virginia
At the tip of the Virginia Peninsula where the James River meets Hampton Roads, Newport News is the shipbuilding capital of the United States - Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding is the only facility in America capable of building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and Aircraft Carrier Row in the harbor typically holds more carrier-class vessels than anywhere else in the world.

Newport News Shipbuilding – now Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News division – is the sole facility in the United States capable of designing, building, and refueling nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The Gerald R. Ford-class carriers now entering service were built in Newport News, as were every Nimitz-class carrier before them. The shipyard employs approximately 25,000 workers at any given time and represents an irreplaceable strategic industrial asset. The harbor view of multiple carriers in various stages of construction and maintenance is extraordinary.
NASA Langley Research Center, one of NASA’s oldest and most historically significant research facilities (where the Mercury astronauts were trained and the computational fluid dynamics that enabled supersonic flight were developed), provides a second major federal employer and research anchor. Christopher Newport University has grown into a selective public liberal arts university that has reshaped the city’s educational profile. The Virginia Living Museum and Peninsula Fine Arts Center give the city cultural infrastructure.
