How do I register to vote or check my registration?

County Clerk or Town Clerk (county/town level - each of Wyoming's 23 counties) / Wyoming Secretary of State, Elections Division (state level)
Step by Step

How to do it

  1. Confirm eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen (proof required), Wyoming resident for at least 30 days before the election in which you offer to vote, at least 18 years old on Election Day, NOT convicted of a felony (see State Notes), and not declared mentally incompetent by court
  2. Choose your registration method:
  3. IN PERSON - County/Town Clerk's Office (PREFERRED METHOD): Wyoming encourages in-person registration; bring proof of citizenship AND proof of Wyoming residency; deadline: 14 days before Election Day; OR register and vote simultaneously during absentee period or on Election Day
  4. BY MAIL: Wyoming voter registration form is available from sos.wyo.gov; form must be COMPLETED AND NOTARIZED (unusual nationally - must have a notary signature); include photocopies of your identification documents; must be RECEIVED by county clerk by 14 days before Election Day; NOTE: Wyoming does NOT accept the National Voter Registration Form
  5. SAME-DAY REGISTRATION AND VOTING: During the absentee voting period (contact your county Clerk for timing) AND on Election Day at the polling place; bring proof of citizenship AND proof of residency; can register and vote simultaneously - very flexible option
  6. NOTE: Wyoming does NOT offer online voter registration (prohibited by statute)
  7. Provide required documentation:
  8. PROOF OF U.S. CITIZENSHIP: Wyoming requires documentary proof of citizenship; accepted documents include WY driver's license (if citizenship verified), U.S. passport, U.S. military ID (some forms), naturalization certificate, or other accepted federal or state documents
  9. PROOF OF WYOMING RESIDENCY: WY driver's license with current address, utility bill, bank statement, pay stub, government document showing current address, or other acceptable residency document

County-specific variations apply

Each of Wyoming's 23 counties has its own County Clerk (or some towns have Town Clerks) administering elections and voter registration. Laramie County (Cheyenne - largest; state capital), Natrona County (Casper), Fremont County (Lander), Sweetwater County (Rock Springs), Teton County (Jackson), Park County (Cody), and Sheridan County are the most active. Wyoming also has Wind River Indian Reservation spanning Fremont and Hot Springs counties; tribal members have had ongoing voting rights access issues; contact Fremont County Clerk for specific guidance.

Wyoming Notes

Important state-specific details

  • NO ONLINE REGISTRATION - prohibited by Wyoming statute; in-person preferred; mail requires notarization.
  • SAME-DAY REGISTRATION: available during absentee period and Election Day; excellent option.
  • CITIZENSHIP PROOF REQUIRED: Wyoming requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship at registration; not just an attestation.
  • MAIL REGISTRATION REQUIRES NOTARIZATION: unusual nationally.
  • REGISTRATION CANCELED if you miss one general election (Wyoming cancels inactive registrations after one missed general election - unusual; must re-register if you missed the last general election and your registration was canceled).
  • FELONY VOTING RIGHTS: Non-violent, non-repeat felons automatically receive a Certificate of Restoration of Rights upon completing sentence (including probation and parole) under Wyoming law; violent felons or repeat offenders must petition for restoration; overall more complex than many states; verify current status at wdoc.wyo.gov or with county Clerk.
  • PHOTO ID REQUIRED to vote in person: WY driver's license, WY ID card, military ID, U.S. passport, tribal ID, student ID (WY school with name, photo, and address); some temporary exceptions through 2029.
  • 30-day Wyoming residency required before election.
  • Polls open 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Mountain Time.
