Notes: Ichetucknee Springs is Columbia County’s jewel – the crystal-clear, 72°F spring water flowing through cypress-lined banks into the Santa Fe River attracts enormous numbers of tubers in summer; the springs are so clear you can see every rock and plant on the bottom from 6 feet above the water; Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center preserves the connection between Stephen Foster’s “Old Folks at Home” (1851) and the Suwannee River – Foster never actually visited the Suwannee (he apparently liked the word’s rhythm); the Florida Folk Festival at the center is one of Florida’s finest cultural traditions

About Columbia County
Columbia County’s Lake City sits at one of Florida’s most strategic highway intersections – where I-75 (running north-south from Detroit to Miami) crosses I-10 (running east-west from Jacksonville to Los Angeles), creating a logistics node that has attracted distribution centers, truck stops, and the commercial infrastructure that major highway interchanges generate. The intersection also positions Lake City as the gateway to north Florida’s interior for travelers coming down from Georgia.
Florida Gateway College provides community college and university-level education. Lake City Medical Center provides regional healthcare. The county’s agricultural economy – beef cattle, timber, some row crops in the north Florida flatwoods – is typical of the inland rural Florida counties that don’t have the resort appeal of the coasts. The Ichetucknee Springs State Park nearby provides one of Florida’s premier spring-fed river experiences.

Columbia County Clerk of the Circuit Court (probate/estate case files – see Probate section above); holds marriage records from 1876, land records from 1871, probate records from 1868, and court records from 1895. A genuine historical quirk: several earlier courthouses (log-built) were destroyed by arson in 1848, 1860, 1867, and 1874, which is why most records before the 1868/1871 dates above simply don’t survive.
