Florida County
Gilchrist County, Florida
The Suwannee River's springs country and Florida's second-smallest county by population - from Fanning Springs State Park's first-magnitude spring on the Suwannee River to the Rock Bluff Ferry (one of Florida's last remaining river ferries, a cable-guided flat-bottom boat crossing the Suwannee), and a tiny North-Central Florida county where the Suwannee River's crystal springs, agricultural flatwoods, and sparse population preserve a genuinely rural Florida landscape increasingly rare in a state of 22 million people.

Notes: Gilchrist Blue Springs is one of Florida’s most extraordinary springs – the main vent’s deep blue color (from the refraction of light through the clear water and the blue-white limestone below) is genuinely unearthly; the spring run to the Suwannee River is excellent for kayaking; Troy Spring’s submerged steamboat (sunk during the Civil War to prevent Union capture; the wooden hull is still visible through crystal water) is one of Florida’s most unusual underwater historical sites; the Lower Suwannee NWR’s coastal marshes are pristine and extremely remote

Environmental: Florida DEP; Suwannee River Water Management District; USFWS (Lower Suwannee NWR); springs protection; Suwannee and Santa Fe River watersheds
Notes: The springs protection challenge (nitrogen from agricultural runoff and septic systems degrading the once-pristine spring water) is Gilchrist County’s primary environmental issue; agricultural operations in the county contribute nitrogen to the Floridan Aquifer recharge zone; the Lower Suwannee NWR’s coastal wetlands are important for Gulf fisheries and wildlife habitat; the Suwannee River’s water quality affects the broader estuary at the Gulf; limited development means relatively light overall environmental demands
About Gilchrist County
Gilchrist County is one of Florida’s smallest and least developed counties – a Suwannee River agricultural community where spring-fed swimming, river canoeing, and cattle ranching define a way of life essentially unchanged from the mid-20th century.
Trenton (the county seat, population ~2,000) is a quiet agricultural town serving the county’s farming and ranching community. The county’s sparse population – fewer than 18,000 residents in 349 square miles – gives it one of the lowest population densities of any Florida county outside the Everglades region.
Fanning Springs State Park – on the Suwannee River at the community of Fanning Springs – contains a first-magnitude spring producing millions of gallons of 68-degree water daily, flowing directly into the Suwannee. The park’s swimming, snorkeling, and river access draw visitors from the surrounding region.
The Rock Bluff Ferry – a cable-guided flat-bottom river ferry operated by Gilchrist County – crosses the Suwannee River at Rock Bluff, one of the last publicly operated river ferries in Florida.
