Notes: Clermont’s identity as the cycling and triathlon capital of Florida is genuine and unique – the hills around Clermont (the “Citrus Tower” viewpoint at 226 feet was once the tallest observation tower in the US and offered views of orange groves to the horizon) provide the only significant cycling terrain in central Florida; Mount Dora is one of Florida’s most beloved small towns – the Lakeside Inn’s history (opened 1883; Calvin Coolidge stayed here; continuous operation for 140+ years) and the charming downtown make it a premier Florida day-trip destination; the Lakeside Inn’s dock on Lake Dora is one of Florida’s most tranquil spots

Environmental & Waste
ENVIRONMENTAL / WASTE MANAGEMENT
Solid Waste: Lake County Solid Waste – (352) 343-9743; comprehensive programs; Lake County’s solid waste management has improved significantly
Environmental: Florida DEP; St. Johns River Water Management District; Harris Chain of Lakes Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP – the most significant environmental restoration program in Lake County); St. Johns Riverkeeper; Lake County’s lakes are a defining ecological feature
Key Issues: Harris Chain of Lakes water quality (the Harris Chain of Lakes (the interconnected system of Lake Harris, Little Lake Harris, Lake Eustis, Lake Griffin, Lake Yale, Lake Beauclair, and Dead River) is one of Florida’s most significant lake systems but has experienced serious water quality decline; excessive nutrients from agricultural runoff, residential fertilizers, and septic systems have created chronic algal blooms; Lake Griffin is one of Florida’s most impaired lakes; the Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP) is a comprehensive effort to reduce nutrient inputs through best management practices, septic-to-sewer conversion, and stormwater treatment; progress is slow); scrub habitat preservation (Lake County’s ridge scrub habitats are among the most significant remaining scrub in Florida; these habitats host Florida scrub jay, sand skink, and many rare endemic plants; development has destroyed much scrub and the remaining habitat needs active management including prescribed burning); growth pressure on lakes (Lake County’s explosive growth (particularly in Clermont and South Lake) is creating stormwater runoff that impacts lake water quality; impervious surface expansion is a significant threat; the county’s lake protection regulations are increasingly important)
Notes: Lake County’s nearly 1,400 named lakes (more than any other Florida county) are both its defining charm and its most significant environmental challenge; the lakes provide the backdrop for recreation, real estate values, and community identity throughout the county; the Harris Chain of Lakes (once renowned for bass fishing and water clarity) has degraded significantly from nutrient pollution; the restoration program (BMAP) requires sustained investment across multiple decades; Clermont’s identity as an elite cycling and triathlon destination (the hills; the National Training Center; the Olympic-distance triathlons on the lake) is genuinely distinctive for a central Florida community usually associated with flat terrain
About Lake County
Lake County lives up to its name: the county contains more than 1,000 named lakes – one of the highest lake densities of any county in the United States – formed by the karst limestone geology underlying Central Florida. The lakes range from small sinkhole ponds to substantial waterbodies like Lake Harris, Lake Griffin, and the Clermont Chain of Lakes, which draw anglers, boaters, and waterfront property buyers from across the region.
The county’s identity is shaped by two distinct forces: the northward expansion of the Orlando metropolitan area into the county’s southern communities, and the extraordinary scale of The Villages retirement community, which straddles Lake, Sumter, and Marion counties and has become the fastest-growing metropolitan statistical area in the United States. Lake County’s portion of The Villages – centered on the Leesburg and Fruitland Park areas – contributes significantly to the county’s population and shifts its demographic profile toward an older, wealthier retired population.
Clermont – on Lake County’s southern border with Orange County – has transformed from a small citrus town into a booming suburb of Orlando, attracting young families and commuters priced out of Orange County. Clermont’s rolling hills (unusual in flat Central Florida) and the Clermont Chain of Lakes make it one of the more scenically distinctive communities in the region. Montverde Academy, a nationally recognized preparatory school with a top-ranked basketball program, is located nearby.
Tavares (the county seat) bills itself as “America’s Seaplane City” – the city maintains a public seaplane base on Lake Dora and actively promotes seaplane operations as part of its identity and tourism economy. Mount Dora – a small lakeside city known for its antique shops, art festivals, and Victorian commercial district – is one of Central Florida’s most popular day-trip destinations.
County government is a five-member Board of County Commissioners with separately elected offices for the Clerk of Courts, Property Appraiser, Sheriff, Supervisor of Elections, and Tax Collector.
