About Sarasota County
Sarasota County is Florida’s cultural jewel on the Gulf Coast – a county that punches far above its population weight in arts, culture, cuisine, and civic sophistication. The county’s identity was shaped by the Ringling family: John and Mable Ringling, of the circus dynasty, made Sarasota their winter home in the 1920s, bequeathing to the city the extraordinary John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art – home to one of the finest collections of Baroque paintings in the Western Hemisphere, the Circus Museum, and Ca’ d’Zan (the Ringling mansion), all set on a spectacular Sarasota Bay campus. The Ringlings effectively positioned Sarasota as an arts and culture destination long before it became a major residential community.
That cultural foundation has compounded over a century. Sarasota today has the Sarasota Orchestra (one of Florida’s oldest professional orchestras), the Sarasota Ballet, the Florida Studio Theatre, Asolo Repertory Theatre, the Sarasota Opera, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and dozens of galleries – all within a mid-sized coastal city of about 59,000. The county’s other major communities include Venice (home to Shark’s Tooth capital of the world beaches and a substantial retiree population), North Port (one of Florida’s fastest-growing cities, transformed from a 1950s Charlotte Harbor Estates development into a diverse suburban city), and the barrier island community of Siesta Key, which consistently ranks among the top beach destinations in the United States (and the world) in travel rankings.
County government is a five-member Sarasota County Commission with separately elected offices for the Clerk of Circuit Court and Comptroller, Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector, and Supervisor of Elections.
