Macon County, Illinois
Decatur sits at the center of the Corn Belt in a way that is not metaphorical - Archer Daniels Midland built its grain processing empire here, the Staley soybean plant defined American soy processing, and the smell of grain drying in the fall genuinely tells you what county you're in before you read a road sign.

Notes: Macon County was created January 19, 1829, from Shelby County, named for Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina statesman. The area was uninhabited until about 1820, when a Vandalia resident settled along the Sangamon River; further settlement remained sparse until 1828. A commission chose the site that became Decatur as county seat; the first court met in August 1829 at the home of James Ward, about 4 miles south of Decatur.

About Macon County
Macon County is the agricultural processing capital of central Illinois, a fact made evident by the grain elevators, corn processing facilities, and the pervasive aroma that announces Decatur to approaching travelers. Archer Daniels Midland, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors, is headquartered in Decatur and has operated there since 1923. ADM processes corn, soybeans, and wheat into ingredients that go into food, animal feed, and industrial products globally – the scale of the operation, with multiple massive processing facilities in and around Decatur, shapes everything about the local economy from employment to infrastructure to air quality debates. The Staley Manufacturing Company, which pioneered commercial soybean processing in the United States in the early twentieth century, was a Decatur institution before becoming part of the global supply chain.
Abraham Lincoln lived in Decatur from 1830 to 1831 – his first home after arriving in Illinois – and the county has preserved several Lincoln-related sites. Millikin University, a small liberal arts institution with a strong music and arts program, provides higher education anchoring. Decatur has faced population decline and economic challenges common to manufacturing-heavy mid-sized Illinois cities, but the ADM anchor provides stability that purely residential communities lack. The Lake Decatur reservoir on the Sangamon River is a recreational resource for the region.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Macon County Circuit Clerk 253 East Wood Street, Decatur, IL 62523 (217) 425-7098
Macon County was founded January 19, 1829, named for Nathaniel Macon. Its seat, Decatur, is the state’s most populous county seat outside the Chicago and St. Louis metro areas.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Illinois has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code and is not a community property state – it follows common law property principles. Illinois probate is governed by the Probate Act of 1975 (755 ILCS 5/). Two main paths:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where personal property (excluding real estate) is valued at $150,000 or less (raised from $100,000 effective August 15, 2025), with no unresolved debts or claims and no real estate involved. No formal court probate is required.
Formal Probate (Independent or Supervised Administration) – required when the estate doesn’t qualify for the small estate affidavit. Most Illinois probate cases proceed under Independent Administration, letting the estate representative act without prior court approval for most routine actions.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File the decedent’s original will (if one exists) with the Macon County Circuit Clerk, where the decedent resided at death.
Petition the court to open the estate and appoint an executor (if there’s a will) or an administrator (if intestate).
The court issues Letters of Office (Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration) appointing the representative.
Publish notice to creditors and unknown heirs as required by Illinois law.
Under Independent Administration, the representative marshals assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes the remaining estate without needing court approval for each step.
File a final accounting or closing documents to formally close the estate.
What it costs
Illinois imposes its own state estate tax on estates valued above $4 million, with rates up to 16%. There is no Illinois inheritance tax.
Filing fees vary by county – confirm current amounts with the Macon County Circuit Clerk.
Most uncontested probate proceedings in Illinois can be completed within about a year.
