Douglas County, Kansas
Lawrence sits on a bluff above the Kaw River where the University of Kansas has anchored one of the most culturally progressive communities in the Great Plains - a city founded by abolitionists, burned by Quantrill's Raiders, and still reliably the most interesting place in Kansas to have an argument about politics.

Notes: Lawrence was founded in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Company as a deliberate anti-slavery, Free-State stronghold, named for Boston philanthropist Amos A. Lawrence. This made it a central target during the Bleeding Kansas conflict, and on August 21, 1863, the town suffered one of the Civil War’s most devastating civilian attacks: William Quantrill led roughly 400 Confederate guerrillas into Lawrence at dawn, killing an estimated 150-200 unarmed men and boys (about 20% of the town’s male population), burning some 185 buildings, and causing roughly $2 million in 1863-era property damage. The raid – sometimes called the Lawrence Massacre – remains the defining historical event in the city’s identity, commemorated today through self-guided historic tours and preserved sites including the rebuilt Eldridge Hotel. Douglas County also co-owns and operates Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park near Baldwin City, a nationally significant site tied to the broader Bleeding Kansas conflict and considered a precursor to the Civil War. The University of Kansas, founded in Lawrence in 1865, is the county’s other defining institution.

About Douglas County
Douglas County’s founding story is one of the most dramatic in Kansas – and Kansas territorial history is dramatic by almost any measure. Lawrence was established in 1854 by the New England Emigrant Aid Company as a free-state settlement, and it became the primary target of pro-slavery violence during the Bleeding Kansas period. Quantrill’s Raiders attacked and burned Lawrence in August 1863, killing approximately 150 civilians in one of the Civil War’s worst atrocities against non-combatants. The city rebuilt, the University of Kansas was established on Mount Oread in 1866, and Lawrence has maintained its role as the intellectual and progressive counterweight to the rest of Kansas politics ever since.
The University of Kansas, with about 27,000 students and a comprehensive research and medical mission, dominates Douglas County’s economy and culture. KU’s strengths in medicine (KU Medical Center is in Kansas City), law, journalism, and business produce a workforce pipeline that sustains the university’s role as the region’s talent anchor. Lawrence’s Massachusetts Street corridor – the main commercial street – is one of the best independent retail and restaurant streets in the region, and the city’s music scene has produced nationally recognized artists. The county’s farmland in its eastern and western townships remains productive, but Douglas County’s identity is entirely urban and university-defined. It voted for Barack Obama twice and returns Democratic candidates in elections where Kansas as a whole does not – a reliable political outlier that the state has learned to expect.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Douglas County District Court, 7th Judicial District 111 East 11th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044 (785) 832-5256
Douglas County is home to Lawrence, its county seat, and the University of Kansas. It is one of Kansas’s most populous counties.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Douglas County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
