Hutchinson's Cosmosphere and the world's largest underground salt mine - from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center (one of the finest space museums outside the Smithsonian - the Cosmosphere's collection of authentic space artifacts includes the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, a SR-71 Blackbird, and the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside Moscow, making Hutchinson an unexpected destination for space enthusiasts) to the Hutchinson Salt Company's underground mine (one of the largest salt mines in the world, mined continuously since 1923 at a depth of 650 feet - the mine's stable conditions make it a significant document storage facility, housing original film reels and irreplaceable records for Hollywood studios and government agencies).

Notes: Hutchinson, genuinely nicknamed “Salt City,” has been home to commercial salt mining since 1887 atop one of the world’s largest deposits of rock salt, formed roughly 275 million years ago. Strataca (originally opened 1986 as the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, renamed 2013), built within the still-operating Hutchinson Salt Company mine (started 1923 as Carey Salt Company), takes visitors 650 feet underground via double-decker hoist – the only publicly toured salt mine among the 15 in the United States. Hutchinson is also home to the Cosmosphere, an internationally significant space museum that grew from a 1962 planetarium at the Kansas State Fairgrounds into a 105,000-square-foot facility housing more than 13,000 spaceflight artifacts – the largest combined collection of U.S. and Russian spaceflight artifacts in the world, second among U.S. collections only to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, and the only Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Kansas.

About Reno County
Reno County is south-central Kansas’s space museum and underground salt mine county – Hutchinson’s improbable combination of world-class space artifacts and a 650-foot-deep document storage mine make it one of the most distinctive small cities in the Great Plains.
The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center – founded in Hutchinson in 1962 – has grown into one of the finest space museums in the world. The Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, Liberty Bell 7, and an extraordinary Russian space program collection make it a destination rivaling the National Air and Space Museum.
The Hutchinson Salt Company’s mine at 650 feet depth maintains constant temperature and humidity that make it ideal for permanent document storage – Hollywood studios store original film reels here.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Reno County District Court, 27th Judicial District 206 West 1st Street, Hutchinson, KS 67501 (620) 694-2956
Reno County is home to Hutchinson, its county seat, known for the Kansas Underground Salt Museum and the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Reno County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
