Rice County, Kansas
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Coronado's legendary quest - from Quivira National Wildlife Refuge (the 22,000-acre wetland complex on the Arkansas River - one of the most important migratory bird areas in the Central Flyway, with spectacular concentrations of sandhill cranes, white pelicans, and shorebirds during migration) to the Coronado connection (Spanish conquistador Francisco Vásquez de Coronado reached the Quivira region of central Kansas in 1541 searching for the legendary golden city - the Coronado Quivira Museum in Lyons documents this extraordinary episode of early European exploration) and Sterling College's Christian liberal arts tradition.

Office: Rice County Courthouse – 101 W. Commercial, Lyons, KS.
Notes: Lyons is home to the genuinely fascinating Coronado Quivira Museum, operated by the Rice County Historical Society. The museum tells the story of the proto-Wichita people who lived in central Kansas from the 1300s into the early 1700s – later connected by local researchers to the legendary “Kingdom of Quivira” that Spanish conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado sought in his 1541 search for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. Coronado’s expedition, though it never found gold, did make real contact with the Quivira people in this area – marking a genuine and historically significant meeting between Spanish exploration and Native American civilization on the central Great Plains. The museum, dedicated in 1985 with former U.S. Interior Secretary Stewart Udall in attendance, also displays Santa Fe Trail artifacts (the trail ran through Rice County from 1821-1872) and materials from the county’s 1902 settlement era, alongside a replica Quiviran grass lodge with a background mural by noted artist Stan Herd.

About Rice County
Rice County is central Kansas’s Coronado expedition and migratory bird county – Spanish conquistadors reached this Arkansas River valley in 1541 seeking golden cities, and today millions of birds find what they’re looking for in the Quivira wetlands.
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge – 22,000 acres of salt marshes, mudflats, and shallow lakes – hosts extraordinary concentrations of migratory birds in spring and fall. Sandhill cranes, white pelicans, and dozens of shorebird species use the refuge as a critical Central Flyway stopover.
Lyons (the county seat, population ~3,600) is where Coronado is believed to have reached the Arkansas River in 1541, finding Wichita people rather than the golden cities he sought.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Rice County District Court, 20th Judicial District 101 West Commercial Street, 3rd Floor, Lyons, KS 67554 (620) 257-2383 Rice County is in central Kansas, seated in Lyons.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Rice County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
