Kansas County
Wabaunsee County, Kansas
The Flint Hills tallgrass prairie and Wabaunsee's stone church heritage - from Wabaunsee County's position in the heart of the Flint Hills (the county's rocky limestone uplands - the same erosion-resistant geology that saved the tallgrass prairie from the plow across the Flint Hills - contain some of the finest native grass landscapes in North America, with the annual Flint Hills prescribed burns creating a dramatic fire-on-the-prairie spectacle visible for miles) to the "Beecher Bible and Rifle Church" at Wabaunsee (established in 1856 by New England abolitionists who received both Bibles and Sharps rifles - nicknamed "Beecher's Bibles" - from Henry Ward Beecher to defend their Free State community during Bleeding Kansas).

Notes: The small town of Wabaunsee, in Wabaunsee County, is home to the genuinely remarkable Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, one of the earliest permanent church buildings in Kansas and a National Register of Historic Places site since 1971. In 1856, during the violent “Bleeding Kansas” period, prominent Brooklyn abolitionist preacher Henry Ward Beecher – brother of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” author Harriet Beecher Stowe – helped fund and arm a group of roughly 57 men, 4 women, and 2 children from New Haven, Connecticut who set out to settle the Kansas Territory and tip its balance toward becoming a free state. According to well-documented local legend, the rifles Beecher sent them (Sharps carbines) were shipped in crates labeled “Bibles” to smuggle them through pro-slavery Missouri – giving the settlement its enduring nickname, the “Beecher Rifle Colony.” The colonists organized their congregation in 1857, and the surviving native-limestone church building was dedicated in 1862. Still an active, independent congregation today, the church holds Sunday services in the original stone building, supplemented by a 1993 education-center addition.

About Wabaunsee County
Wabaunsee County is east-central Kansas’s Flint Hills and Bleeding Kansas church county – the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church at Wabaunsee is one of the most evocative monuments to the abolitionist spirit that shaped Kansas’s founding character.
The Beecher Bible and Rifle Church – established 1856 by New England Emigrant Aid Company settlers – received its peculiar name from the Sharps rifles that abolitionist preacher Henry Ward Beecher’s congregation funded for Free State settlers, declared to be more useful than Bibles in the fight against slavery. The restored stone church still stands.
Alma (the county seat, population ~800) is a tiny Flint Hills community serving the surrounding ranching county.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Wabaunsee County District Court 215 Kansas Street, Alma, KS 66401 (785) 765-2406
Wabaunsee County is in the Flint Hills region of northeastern Kansas, seated in Alma, known for its collection of native limestone buildings (“City of Native Stone”).
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Wabaunsee County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
